Description: 

The Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education & Practice (ISTEP) in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering invites applications for a continuing teaching stream appointment, specializing in the instruction of communication to engineering students. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an expected start date of July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter. 

ISTEP seeks applications from individuals with expertise in postsecondary instruction of communication within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Applicants must have a PhD in English, Technical Communication, Engineering or a related field at the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, combined with at least 4 years of teaching experience, or a Master’s degree in one of these or related fields alongside extensive teaching experience in an academic or professional environment (minimum 10 years). Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical excellence within an undergraduate degree granting program in a variety of educational settings, including lectures, tutorials, groups, and one-on-one. The applicant will have successfully integrated the instruction of written, oral, and visual communication principles within STEM (and especially engineering) related projects, courses, and curricula. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate commitment to Communication-Integrated Teaching and Learning or Writing in the Disciplines pedagogy, an interest in teaching-related scholarly activities, and an engagement with the relevant professional communities of practice. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths.  

Experience designing and delivering instruction to help English professional language development for multilingual students will be considered an asset. Experience in graduate level writing and communication instruction, particularly in genres such as proposals, research articles, and theses would also be beneficial to the application. Additionally, experience in the integration of additional transdisciplinary competencies such as team skills, leadership, ethics and equity, lifelong learning and other CEAB graduate attributes is preferred.

Evidence of excellence in teaching communication, engineering education, curricular development and pedagogical inquiry will be demonstrated within the application through: 1) a CV and cover letter documenting experience including teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, and presentations at significant conferences; 2) a teaching dossier, including a strong statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi and course materials, and teaching evaluations; and 3) letters of reference from referees of high standing endorsing excellent teaching and commitment to teaching innovation. The successful applicant will teach in multiple courses across all years and multiple programs and will contribute to the ongoing integration of communication across Engineering’s undergraduate curricula. 

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
