Salary: Field Educators hourly rate (casual):  $47.54 per hour, plus superannuation. For appointees with PhD the casual rate of $56.65 per hour applies.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The School of Arts and Social Sciences is seeking expressions of interest from experienced Social Workers and/or Community Welfare Workers for Casual Field Educator opportunities in the Bachelor of Community Welfare, Bachelor of Social Work and/or Master of Social Work (Professional Qualifying) degrees. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development of future Social Workers and Community Welfare Workers.

The Field Education program has been designed to build capabilities in applying knowledge, skills and values to professional practice within the human services sector. The program enables students to draw together academic learning with real-life situations.

Field Educators offer support, guidance and supervision to students undertaking a placement where there is not a suitably qualified or experienced onsite field educator available. Currently, Field Educators are undertaking their work online.

Field Educators in Social Work must have a undergraduate or masters level qualification in Social Work and at least two years post-qualifying experience, and in Community Welfare must have completed a three-year undergraduate degree at minimum, with subsequent professional experience.

Opportunities are available in all Australian states and territories, including Western QLD, North QLD, South East QLD, North Coast NSW, Western NSW, Sydney regions, South Coast NSW, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Tasmanian city and regional centres and various other locations.

Key Responsibilities

The duties of Field Educator will involve:

  • Support students to establish effective learning-focused supervisory relationships, including supporting students to engage in critical reflection and develop their professional identity.
  • Support students to develop appropriate learning goals and tasks to guide their professional practice learning during placement.
  • Assess and review student progress against required learning outcomes.
  • Liaise with the agency supervisor and Field Education staff.
  • Ensure the student abides by the policies, work practices, protocols and regulations of the organisation and SCU. Ensure the student’s workplace health and safety needs are met in placement.

Selection Criteria

The successful appointee should possess the following qualifications, skills, abilities and experience:

  • Community welfare field educators will have a minimum of a 3 year degree in a welfare, human services or community work-related discipline plus a minimum of three years’full-time equivalent post-qualifying experience in a community services setting.

or Social Work field educators must be eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers and have a minimum of two years’ full-time equivalent post-qualifying practice experience.

  • Commitment to enhancing the student learning experience.
  • Excellent time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to operate various computer programs and communication platforms (such as Zoom).
  • Current Working with Children Check, or state equivalent, is essential.
  • Previous field education or academic experience is desirable, but not essential.
