Clinical Laboratory Supervisor
Reporting to the Interim Manager, Covid Lab, this position provides leadership and serves as primary operational support for the Covid Laboratory in the Department of Pathology. Lead and provide support to managers in overseeing staff, coordinating and administering all aspects of transactional HR duties for the Department of Pathology clinical labs. Design and implement new HR organizational initiatives. Deliver superior customer service to meet HR needs including, but not limited to, compliance with Department and University policies & procedures as well as state and federal guidelines; assist in identifying need for/improving department policies and procedures, understand and provide guidance on Local 34 contract language and application, as well as basic labor relations issues, create job postings, oversee staffing processes, including requisition management, candidate screening, reference checks and on boarding/off boarding, and training. In close cooperation with the managers and with guidance from HRG act as the point person for all AP labs which are often complex and confidential in nature. Track and monitor attendance, tardiness, FMLA’s, etc. as it relates to all staff in AP labs. Consult on workflow redesign and provide training and troubleshooting on issues. Supervise staff, maintain efficient clinical budgets, training programs and workflows.
Evaluates the effectiveness of clinical operational procedures and makes or recommends changes to facilitate the highest level of patient service and access. Identifies issues that impede delivery of quality patient access; develops and implements short-term improvements and plans long term process improvements. Partners with the leadership team to develop long term objectives for the practice related to access productivity, compliance, communication and patient satisfaction. Monitors and analyzes monthly clinical statistics and key productivity and patient satisfaction indicators to assess accuracy and effectiveness of processes, and identifies trends or items requiring immediate corrective action. Monitors and enforces compliance with existing policies and procedures, Practice Standards, HIPAA regulations and other compliance standards throughout all clinical activities. Oversees the monitoring and enforcing of customer service standards for staff members addressing deficiencies. Resolves patient service and clinical issues by interfacing with clinic staff, YNHH, YMA management, faculty and other clinical operations managers. Supports clinical operations of designated unit(s) by ensuring appropriate staffing, training, ongoing education, and monitoring of day-to-day activities. Approve and monitor all personnel functions including staff schedules, payroll, time-off, and attendance and lunch schedules; arrange appropriate coverage. Works with clinical leadership and key departmental clinical/administrative staff on matters relating to practice performance and clinical issues in accordance with budget, goals and benchmarks. Provides leadership and direction to clinical staff where appropriate. Researches and develops proposals for internal and external program initiatives and new administrative and clinical opportunities and advises leadership on the impact of new projects or initiatives. Prepares special analyses, reports and complex modeling to support the decision-making process. Analyzes proposals and determines cost, benefits, risks and liabilities. Ensures office compliance with Federal/state/local regulations. Represents area about facility concerns, maintenance and security. Keeps current in clinical management and process improvement concepts through involvement in professional organizations, seminar attendance, user group meetings and individual research.

- Evaluates work requests to determine if they are appropriate to the unit or another area.
- Ensures that work flow is organized and staffed for quality efficient completion.
- Communicates deadlines and special circumstances to staff
- Maintains equipment and supplies for unit.
- Completes evaluations of direct report employees.
- Interacts with University personnel to define work assignments and requirements, communicate progress of work, and plan and coordinate projects.
- Interacts with external sources to coordinate work necessary to fulfill projects, keep abreast of new products and technologies, or arrange for subcontractors.
- Supervises a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Previous experience managing staff in a clinical setting.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Ability to think strategically, analytically and influence constructive change with strong collaboration and relationship building skills.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Demonstrated ability managing monitor specimen output and managing the workflow of the lab.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Strong communications skills, both written and verbal.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Experience in a BSL 2 Biology laboratory setting: Pipetting reagents and triaging large volumes of clinical specimens, reagent ordering, laboratory courier deliveries, specimen collection, indexing and retrieval of clinical specimens, interpretation of basic laboratory reports, working active case lists and interfacing with the clinical laboratory system.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Meets all CAP requirements for working in a Molecular Covid Lab. Work Day experience. EPIC and CoPath experience preferred.
