Position Focus:

Full stack developer working on a modular information system as part of a small development team for the Office of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS). Design, implement, document, test, maintain, and support the large modular information system, EHS Integrator, and other information systems, primarily using C#, SQL Server, and multiple UI technologies, running in Azure. Work closely with business process owners, users, and other stakeholders to analyze and design solutions to business problems, both independently and with other development team members. Design, implement, and document information system solutions. Provide ongoing system administration, maintenance, and user support for departmental information systems. Manage software development projects from analysis to deployment and end-user training. Collaborate closely with development team members on continuously improving core system functionality, strictly observing and enforcing system conventions and standards defined as a team. Provide system administration and operational support for all departmental information systems. Support users with patience and a positive attitude while balancing development and operational responsibilities. Coordinate and work with other internal/external departments/organizations that provide services to EHS, or that EHS provides services to, or has system integrations with. Design, implement, and maintain system integrations and ETL to and from other internal/external department/organization information systems and other data sources. Work with information security professionals on security design reviews for new applications/technologies.

This position will carry out the full lifecycle of software development, including design, information security, implementation, documentation, testing, data migration, deployment, end-user training, and support the ramp-up of the new and improved business processes. This position will manage the software projects associated with the given solutions they are responsible for. Additionally, the position has operational responsibilities, shared in close collaboration with other development team members, including setting up and maintaining infrastructure, system administration, system issue resolution, data and application administration, reporting, data analysis, and user support, for all departmental information systems. As part of the operations of the department, this position will support operational issues and high priority requests as needed. The development, operations, and support responsibilities of this position will primarily be focused on EHS Integrator, a large modular information system platform with over forty modules that support a wide spectrum of operations and responsibilities, including authorizations, inspections, inventory, training, waste, and others, across multiple EHS disciplines, including Biological Safety, Radiation Safety, Chemical Safety, Environmental Affairs, and others. The system supports EHS operations and is used to report on University, State, and Federally regulated activities pertaining to maintaining a healthy and safe environment for students, employees and the larger community within which the university operates. As a software developer for a large platform with many integrated modules, this position will work closely with other team members to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform. To do this, we must strictly follow software standards and conventions defined by the team, add to and enhance the core shared features, upgrade platform technology to meet modern standards, and continuously improve our development processes and practices.

Essential Duties

  1. Develops programs or systems of small to moderate size and complexity. Modifies existing systems at all levels of difficulty.
  2. Provides informational input into decisions concerning the development and delivery of applications, programs and systems. Defines and analyzes requirements to meet the expectations of stakeholders and intended end user needs, scheduled timeline, and budgetary targets.
  3. Analyzes, defines and designs new systems and applications. Writes code in support of business solutions.
  4. Responsible for the creation, definition, communication, and management of project plans which includes architectural design, technology selection and methodologies to apply.
  5. Troubleshoots problems and provide ongoing maintenance and support for applications and systems.
  6. Prepares documentation, user manuals and develops formal proposals for new systems and modifications to existing systems. Mentors technical staff and provide training for end users.
  7. Contributes in the development of policies or modifications to exiting policies.
  8. Applies and keeps current with existing and emerging technologies and methodologies. Provides ongoing input to the establishment of programming standards, procedures, and methodologies.
  9. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and two years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

C# and SQL. 

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Team player, positive attitude, and patient with users and team members. Ability to understand OOP, software patterns, use of frameworks, and framework services.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to manage projects and communicate effectively with both technical and functional team members. Experience with full system software lifecycles for multiple concurrent projects, while also directly contributing to the coding effort.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to maintain a professional code of ethics regarding confidentiality of information and protecting rights of end-users and owners of data.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to balance development responsibilities with system operations, and user support, and switch to operational demands at any time to support the operations of EHS.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Five years of progressively more complex experience in developing and supporting large information systems. ASP.Net MVC strongly preferred, as well as Azure SQL Database, App Service, Functions, and other Azure services. Azure DevOps Git, Work Items, and Pipelines. Modern web, mobile UI technologies, and Microsoft technologies preferred.
