Reporting to the Assistant Director for Clinical Research Support Laboratory, the Laboratory Manager will support the Clinical Research Support Labs (CRSL) in New Haven. The purpose is to provide meticulous preparation, coordination, and shipment of biological specimens obtained from patients participating in clinical oncology trials. This position requires comprehending and following protocols for a large number of clinical studies with a high degree of accuracy. Responsibilities include oversight of the face-paced high-volume daily laboratory operations, directly overseeing and managing 10-14 staff operating out of two physical laboratory locations, and working closely with the Assistant Director for Clinical Research Support Laboratory.
- Supervises the day-to-day activities of support staff.
- Assesses and resolves or escalates problems arising within unit.
- Assists in the development of policies and procedures in support of unit.
- Assists in long-range planning for work unit needs.
- Participates in unit budget planning.
- Evaluates work requests to determine if they are appropriate to the unit or another area.
- Ensures that work flow is organized and staffed for quality efficient completion.
- Communicates deadlines and special circumstances to staff.
- Maintains equipment and supplies for unit.
- Completes evaluations of direct report employees.
- Interacts with University personnel to define work assignments and requirements, communicate progress of work, and plan and coordinate projects.
- Interacts with external sources to coordinate work necessary to fulfill projects, keep abreast of new products and technologies, or arrange for subcontractors.
- Supervises a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relay information to/obtain information from internal Yale staff as well as external study staff, including physicians, and research staff, and demonstrated ability to supervise and manage lab staff. Ability to manage change, boost employee morale and productivity, and to build trust.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Strong analytic and critical thinking skills. Ability to comprehend complex clinical trial laboratory manuals and associated materials and protocols with a demonstrated ability to extract relevant information.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Demonstrated knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology. Proven ability to work in a lab, preferably a BSL-2 laboratory. Ability to travel to different laboratory locations and to transport laboratory supplies and specimens via motor vehicle to other sites; a valid driver’s license and the ability to use of one's own motor vehicle is required.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Excellent time management and organizational skills. Ability to meet daily deadlines while handling multiple projects.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Strong computer skills including intermediate proficiency with MS Office specifically Word, Excel, Powerpoint; knowledge with or ability to learn additional software including OnCore and EPIC.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Masters degree in science or related health field or medical technology degree. Previous clinical trials experience and/or experience in an oncology setting. Experience working with both unionized and non-unionized staff.
