Job Description Summary

The Computational Memory Lab at the University of Pennsylvania seeks to recruit a talented scientific project manager to help lead a multi-center team in carrying out research on the use of brain stimulation to study brain networks underlying cognitive functions and to help create neuromodulation therapies that will someday help restore memory function in patients who have suffered brain injuries

This position requires a unique combination of leadership / teaming skills and technical expertise in the fields of neuroscience and/or bioengineering.  The project manager will supervise a staff of full-time research specialists and software developers, and assist them in carrying out this federally-funded BRAIN initiative project.  The successful applicant will enjoy leading a dedicated and hardworking team whose hub is at the University of Pennsylvania but that includes researchers at leading institutions around the world.  

Applicants should possess an exceptional academic background, including at least some coursework in computer science/engineering/ mathematics, and should also have experience in managing projects that involved supervisory experience.  This position is contingent upon funding.

Job Description

With oversight by the Principal Investigator, the Research Project Manager will: coordinate research activities across hospital sites and collaborators, including travel as necessary; interface with funding sponsors; train and direct junior personnel at all sites; oversee data collection at all sites; organize team meetings; interface with specialized equipment suppliers; administer budgets and project expenditures/purchasing; prepare progress reports and IRB continuing reviews; and work closely with the research team members and the systems development team to meet project goals and milestones. He/she will directly oversee staff research specialists and scientific programmers/software engineers.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • A Master's degree in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, biophysics, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of research experience, ideally in a setting of high-volume data collection and quantitative analysis.
  • Experience with clinical and/or research electrophysiology systems (scalp EEG, intracranial EEG, human single unit recordings).
  • Strong neuroscience/neuroanatomy background knowledge.
  • Experience with scientific/statistical computing techniques and languages (MATLAB, R, Python/SciPy, or similar).
  • Strong communication skills, including written/spoken presentations (including technical details), training, formal e-mail correspondence, etc.
  • Excellent organizational skills

Preferred:

  • An advanced degree (PhD, DSc, etc.) in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, biophysics, or related field.
  • Experience with grant progress report preparation and proposal writing.
  • Experience with regulatory affairs: IRB protocol submission and continuing reviews.
  • Experience with neuroimaging techniques (MR, CT).
  • Experience with research or clinical brain stimulation systems.
  • Proficiency with scientific/statistical computing techniques and languages (MATLAB, R, Python/SciPy, or similar); familiarity with experiment software programming.
  • Experience using UNIX/Linux systems, including high performance computing clusters.
