RESEARCH SCIENTIST/PROJECT MANAGER, Biological Engineering, to join an exciting project sponsored by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Will be part of an interdisciplinary team of synthetic biologists and chemical engineers in a project spanning several institutions, including MIT, Conagen, and BioCellection. Will develop a process for the biodegradation of plastic waste and its up conversion into products, and coordinate efforts across a team from industry and academia. Responsibilities include performing your own biological engineering research project and ensuring that the project achieves its overarching scientific goals; basic synthetic biology research coordinated within a team of researchers located in the Boston and San Francisco areas; hands-on implementation and troubleshooting; collaboration with third-party research groups also participating in the DARPA project; reporting to the sponsor; and communication with research partners in various sites.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: a Ph.D. in bioengineering, chemical engineering, biotechnology, engineering, or related field; at least four years post-Ph.D. research experience, either as a postdoc or in industry, including experience with complex research projects and the management of multidisciplinary projects; strong organizational, quantitative, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills; self-motivation; and proficiency with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of teams; meet project deliverables in a timely way; evaluate plans and methods, revising as appropriate; and work effectively in a fast-paced, cutting-edge and challenging environment.
PREFERRED: experience with synthetic biology, biotechnology, fermentation, and catalysis. Job #18999
Occasional domestic and international travel will be required, as will working occasional nights and weekends.
Must be able to start by Februay 1, 2021, and relocate to the Boston area by March 1, 2021.
