Job Description Summary

This veterinarian will coordinate specimen submissions from the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) to the relevant veterinary diagnostic laboratory in the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostics System (PADLS) on behalf of the Wildlife Futures Program at Penn Vet. The successful candidate will communicate with diagnostic personnel and submitters as cases are received to coordinate appropriate testing and ensure cases are processed and reported in a timely manner; communicate diagnostic results clearly to agency staff and help interpret any wildlife management, domestic animal or human health implications.  Create SOPs for sample collection and submission as well as assist in development of a digital wildlife health database and tissue biobank. Preference will be given to a veterinarian who has experience with North American wildlife. This position is located in Kennett Square, PA.

Job Description

Responsibilities will include:

• Coordinate submissions to veterinary diagnostic laboratories, including communicating with diagnostic personnel and submitters to coordinate appropriate testing and ensure cases are processed in a timely manner
• Communicate implications of diagnostic results for wildlife population management, domestic animal and/or human health, and communicate relevant findings to submitters and direct follow up questions back to Wildlife Futures staff as needed.
• Assist in creating protocols/SOPs for sample collection and submission and disease surveillance.
• Assist in maintaining a digital, centralized wildlife health database to streamline case submissions and manage retained specimens.
• Participate in Wildlife Futures Program meetings, trainings, communications, and outreach.

Qualifications

Ph.D, VMD/DVM degree and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Experience working at a diagnostic laboratory and/or with a state or federal wildlife program is preferred. Excellent communication skills and attention to detail are essential. A valid driver's license is required. This position is contingent upon grant funding.
