Heralded as a hub of undergraduate innovation, the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) creates and sustains meaningful interactions between students and faculty both within and outside the classroom. The Undergraduate Research team within the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) facilitates student participation in original scholarship and fosters intellectual relationships between students and faculty mentors across all disciplines at Stanford. This small and collaborative team serves as a bridge between Stanford University’s educational and research missions by offering consulting, advice, funding, and programming to students, their mentors, and the broader campus community.

The Research Communities Manager 1) identifies and solves barriers to equitable access to undergraduate research opportunities, 2) delivers outreach and workshops for departments, research centers, interdisciplinary programs, community centers, and student groups, 3) delivers programming that promotes best practices among research mentors, 4) helps students understand the intellectual and professional pathways enabled by participation in original scholarship, and 5) collaborates with other VPUE staff to advance a broader suite of initiatives that ensure inclusion, access, and equity in educational opportunities. The Research Communities Manager magnifies the impacts of research participation by creating opportunities for student preparation and reflection, and by designing and executing community- and cohort- building programs for students and mentors.

The Research Communities Manager reports to the Senior Director of Undergraduate Research and collaborates closely with other members of the Undergraduate Research team, other VPUE teams, and colleagues across the University as needed.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Manage a suite of reflection, inclusion, and community-building programs for undergraduate researchers and mentors. Assess program effectiveness and make decisions on program goals and practices.
  • Prioritize, develop, and implement new diversity, equity, and inclusion programming and initiatives for undergraduate research. Make strategic recommendations for future programs.
  • Lead the STEM Fellows mentoring program for underrepresented minority students. Design outreach strategies, solicit nominations from faculty, staff, and advisors, and organize the selection committee. Develop relevant programming for selected students, including the recruitment and orientation of graduate student mentors. Coach selected students on research opportunities and career trajectories, and disburse stipends to students for approved research activities.
  • Serve as the Undergraduate Research team's liaison to University community centers, including the Asian American Activities Center, Black Community Services Center, Diversity and First-Gen Office, El Centro Chicano y Latino, Queer Student Resources, Markaz Resource Center, Native American Cultural Center, and Women's Community Center.
  • Act as the Undergraduate Research team's representative on an emerging VPUE working group focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Contribute to new initiatives and projects as they evolve.
  • Collaborate to develop ways of advancing outreach and connections to first-generation / low income student communities and other communities traditionally underserved by educational opportunities.
  • Act as subject matter expert in undergraduate research pedagogy and inclusive practices by providing consultation and advice to partner organizations, staff, and faculty.
  • Develop and present effective and creative student-facing media (e.g.- workshops on proposal writing, guidelines for presenting a research poster, coaching on communication with mentors) for departmental and University-wide events.
  • Create opportunities for discussion of best practices in mentoring (e.g.- moderating a new Slack channel for experienced and new mentors).
  • Design and deliver training for new mentors, including advanced graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and new faculty.
  • Advise students on research, fellowship, and scholarship opportunities. Help students build robust connections with their other academic advisors, faculty, and research mentors.
  • Support the team's fellowship-related work, including promoting national fellowship programs (the Beinecke Scholarship, Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress Presidential Fellows Program, The Goldwater Scholarship, and James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program) to relevant and underserved student populations. Assist with the administration of application processes, timelines, and external/internal communications.
  • Organize graduate student panels and other programming to increase undergraduate awareness of and preparation for research-based graduate study.
  • Develop reports and administrative processes as necessary. Interpret and implement university relevant academic, administrative, and financial processes and policies.

To be successful in this position you will have:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Ph.D. or equivalent research experience at the graduate level in a discipline represented within Stanford’s undergraduate curriculum strongly preferred.
  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to students, internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Experience designing and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives or their equivalent.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills to review and analyze complex information.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with common productivity applications and collaboration tools, and the ability to learn new tools as needed.
  • Experience leveraging communication tools, social media platforms, and content creation software in support of programming goals.
  • Understanding of financial transactions and budgets.
  • Ability to apply and ensure compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
