The Department of Sustainability and Energy Management (SEM) brings an integrated and deliberate focus to campus sustainability. The department works to advance sustainability in campus operations, optimizing and prioritizing efficiency in all aspects of campus life, from resource and utility management, to transportation and community behavior. SEM develops strategic, long-term goals that help reduce Stanford's environmental impact, supporting the university’s commitment to be a good environmental steward.

The Office of Sustainability and Business Services seeks an experienced and committed outreach professional to manage the outreach, education and training components of the Office’s sustainability programs and services designed for Stanford campus. Within the framework of the strategic work portfolio for sustainability at Stanford  https://sustainable.stanford.edu/about/areas-work, this position will advance outreach and educational aspects of Office of Sustainability and Sustainable Stanford programs via digital and print multimedia content.  

The ideal candidate will come from a communications and media management background with proven industry work experience in program design, delivery, and customer communication. The incumbent must be self-directed, have a suite of creative skills, proven work portfolio and collaboration skills.  The position will have one dedicated staff and various vendor contacts to manage.

What you will do in this role:

You will be responsible for (but not limited to):

  1. Outreach Strategy, Planning & budget – 10% of time
  • Maintain and Revise outreach and engagement strategic plan, utilizing data on user trends to revise programs and directions as needed.
  • Develop metrics-based strategies that identify and prioritize audience(s) and create compelling engagement pathways for individual, building, and campus-wide participation in sustainability programs.
  • Develop digital marketing techniques to advance current offerings and further engage key campus community audiences.
  • Define new and refine existing communications programs, assess success of Sustainable Stanford’s efforts.
  • Manage the outreach program budget.
  • Lead and maintain “My Cardinal Green” Program– 30% of time
  • Manage the My Cardinal Green individual action platform (http://sustainable.stanford.edu/my-cardinal-green), which connects campus users with resources and opportunities to minimize your environmental impact and maximize sustainability efforts on campus. The lead will:
    • Oversee messaging and communications to increase participation, managing backend administration of actions, incentives, and reporting.
    • Manage survey content and integration with system.
    • Work with developers to improve program function and streamline administration
    • Develop partnership opportunities and custom engagement programs, working with stakeholders across campus
    • Manage reporting on program engagement and status and identify areas of opportunity for improvement.
  • Lead and manage Print, Web and Media Publications - 30% of time
  • Manage the production of Stanford’s annual sustainability report, Sustainability: A Year in Review, including content collection and creation, as well as management of design and print vendors
  • Maintain Sustainable Stanford website and content (with departmental IT group) and develop plans to create content that showcases data from program partners and drives participation in sustainability programs.
  • Manage the publication process for Cardinal Green monthly e-newsletter.
  • Maintain a strong campus presence via the Stanford Report, partner newsletter publications, list serve communities, and social media.
  • Work with 3rd party design vendors to provide and package attractive collateral
  • Manage design and production of ad-hoc promotional pieces, writing original copy for postcards, pamphlets, brochures, websites, news releases, infographics, video, and other publications promoting alternative transportation.
  • Periodically submit articles, awards, and presentation proposals to private and public forums for publication, press and other media opportunities. 
  • Develop and Manage Employee and Student Training – 20% of time
  • Design and develop sustainability knowledge and practices trainings for employees and students via online and in-person methods. 
  • Offer training several times a year, in conjunction with associated Cardinal Green programs, and maintain participation metrics.  
  • Develop metrics and tools to track progress and improvements. Analyze data regarding program participation and recommend refinements to achieve goals.
  • Drive departmental adoption of Outreach Programs – 10% of time  
  • Work with schools and departments to ensure wider adoption and improvement to promote a pronounced culture of sustainability. 
  • Design and manage conservation campaigns throughout the year, focused on various sustainability topics and encouraging participation with Cardinal Green programs.

To be successful in this role you must bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communication and ten years of relevant communication program management experience, or combination and relevant experience
  • Interest in and academic background in sustainability field.
  • Must have strong writing and graphic experience
  • Solid knowledge of the current media/social media landscape, including web and video development
  • Must be inquisitive and self-driven
  • able to plan and execute projects on a timeline
  • have good instincts for design and understand how to analyze and report on data

Strongly Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in business, communications or environmental science/policy preferred.
  • Strong communications skills across channels, with proven track record of building engagement and growing brand reputation,
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging and building communities online through web campaigns, engagement portals, and other promotional materials.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and delivering scalable community engagement programs, either among student or employee groups, including establishing strong program partnerships to drive participation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of marketing and public relations best practices and their application in the higher education research institution setting.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of web content management systems (Drupal/Wordpress), and intermediate skills in creative programs suites (Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator and/or Photoshop)
  • Ability to manage a complex and often competing set of priorities in a results-oriented environment.
  • Must possess strong organizational, time management and project management skills, with the ability to support multiple projects of various types at difference stages with emphasis on accuracy and meeting milestones and deadlines.
  • High degree of discretion and judgment; ability to resolve interdependent deadlines with tact and diplomacy.
  • High degree of energy and initiative, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • This position assumes participation in local evening and planned weekend events on campus several times a year. Policy
