The Department of Culture, Media & Creative Industries seeks to hire a Lecturer in Culture, Media & Creative Industries. The post will contribute to research, teaching, leadership and pastoral support across our expanding portfolio of courses. This includes the BA Culture, Media & Creative Industries and three postgraduate programmes: Global Media Industries MA; Arts & Cultural Management MA, and Cultural & Creative Industries MA. We are seeking an inspiring scholar and educator who can lead curriculum development in relation to media and communications, in particular. In keeping with the department's strategic priorities of inclusivity, sustainability, care, and reflexivity, applicants' research and teaching should demonstrate a commitment to making critical and positive interventions in society through exploring and transforming diverse global media and communications. We particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates, as they are under-represented at this level.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Culture, Media & Creative Industries or a closely related discipline, or be very near to completion, with an excellent knowledge and understanding of a relevant field of expertise, and an established or developing record of high quality research publications appropriate to their career stage. They will be a highly effective researcher and educator, with experience of research-led teaching and assessment in Higher Education (preferably in the UK), a commitment to student learning and welfare, and an aptitude for working within an interdisciplinary framework. Indicatively, the post-holder will be able to teach on modules such as Media 1.0: Histories, Theories & Analysis; Media 2.0: Audiences, Industries & Convergence; Media Production Cultures (level 4); Gaming Cultures (level 5); Games Industries and Cultures; Immersive Media and Extended Realities; London Media Industries; Global Media Industries: Perspectives & Approaches, and Media Industry Innovations (level 7). We would also like the post holder to develop the department's portfolio of BA option modules in line with the Programme's development and specifically in relation to media and communications.

This post will be offered on a full-time, indefinite contract.

Key responsibilities

  • Produce high quality research outputs, playing an active role in supporting the Department's research culture
  • Recruit and supervise PhD students
  • Identify and apply to external sources for research funding, enhancing CMCI's record of research income
  • Deliver outstanding teaching for BA and MA optional and core modules in the department
  • Provide high quality supervisory guidance for BA and MA level dissertations and PhD students
  • Assess coursework and examinations as required
  • Fulfil administrative tasks as directed by the Head of Department
  • Contribute to the welfare of students through the personal tutor system

  • PhD awarded or very near to completion in Culture, Media & Creative Industries or a relevant interdisciplinary field
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of a relevant field of expertise (especially relating to media and communications), evidenced by an established or developing record of high quality research publications appropriate to career stage
  • Clearly defined research interests and plans compatible with the research strategies of the Department, Faculty and College
  • Excellent administrative and organisational capability, underpinned by strong presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of teaching relevant subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, with evidence of innovative and effective research-led teaching and ability to engage and inspire students of diverse and international backgrounds
  • Experience of grading a variety of assessment types at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and providing helpful and constructive feedback
  • Experience of providing academic advice and pastoral support to students, demonstrating commitment to student learning, supporting student welfare, and enhancing the student experience
  • An interdisciplinary mindset and aptitude for working within an interdisciplinary framework, including teaching across disciplines and beyond the immediate field of expertise
  • Aptitude for working collaboratively with colleagues in planning and delivering teaching and in the discharge of administrative duties
  • Demonstrable networking skills, facilitating partnerships and new research projects, and bridging professional and academic communities of practice relating to diverse global media and communications
