The Black Community Services Center (BCSC) seeks an Assistant Director to work collaboratively to build a community that provides students with a sense of belonging, identity affirmation, purpose, empowerment, and leadership development.

The BCSC is proud to be part of The Centers for Equity, Community, and Leadership, within the division of Student Affairs. The Centers consist of the Asian American Activities Center, Black Community Services Center, El Centro Chicano y Latino, Markaz Community Resources Center, Native American Cultural Center, Queer Student Resources Center, and Women's Community Center. Each Center works to advance learning and student development through five pillars - Academic and Intellectual Engagement, Leadership Development, Mental Health & Well-Being, Community Building, and Alumni Engagement.

Reporting to the Associate Dean and Director of the Black Community Services Center and working alongside the Associate Director, the Assistant Director of the Black Community Services Center is an administrator that comprises the 3-career staff in in the center. The role serves as a campus partner and advocate within all functional areas of the university, including faculty, senior administrators, academic departments, administrative offices, staff, and alumni. This role takes the lead on providing leadership and development to the BCSC student staff and Black Volunteer Student Organizations connected to the BCSC. 
This role works between and among university offices and departments with particular attention to advocating for Black undergraduate and graduate students and other marginalized communities on campus. The Assistant Director must also be attuned to the dynamics between the individual, the institution, and the home environment of students. This position is expected to assist with advancing the needs of the Black community as well as a broader vision and definition of diversity, equity, leadership, and community. 

In this role, you will:

  • Work collaboratively with the Director, Associate Director and student staff to manage, plan and execute cultural, academic and educational programs with university wide impact to meet the goals of the BCSC. 
  • Manage the work of student employees, processes, and projects that includes recruitment, hiring, training, coaching and mentoring, and managing performance and staffing levels. 
  • Advise Black Volunteer Student Organizations affiliated with BCSC on major event planning, organizational development, fundraising, recruiting, membership, retention, leadership development, and university policy for activities on campus. 
  • Responsible for daily operation of facility space inclusive of the community center and main office. 
  • Foster a collaborative environment connecting students and organizations with one another to work together on related programs or projects within BCSC. 
  • Assist with managing department budget including drafting reports and forecasting, allocate money for programs, regularly reconcile budgets, originate and approve transactions.
  • Crisis prevention and intervention: conduct counseling, intervention, and referral when necessary to assist students in resolving personal/academic problems and crises. 
  • Analyze and develop reports, portals, and student facing communications. 
  • Manage outreach programs, relationships with external community and university liaisons. 
  • Interpret and implement university policy related to academic policies; oversee the implementation of policies and practices for a student population or school.

To be successful in this position, you will bring: 

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. 
  • Student development knowledge and experience in student affairs or within higher education setting. 
  • Knowledge of Black student and community development in a university environment. 
  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to review and analyze complex information. 
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity and proficiency with Google Docs and/or Box, Zoom and WebX and other video conferencing and online meeting tools. 
  • Understanding of financial transactions. 
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations. 
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

In addition, our preferred requirements include: 

  • Master’s Degree preferred, but not required.
  • Relevant experience that includes at least four years in higher education, focused on diversity, inclusion, and equity.  
  • Knowledge of the challenges faced by Black undergraduate and graduate students in a highly selective residential institution and ability to assist students in navigating this environment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with and gain support from a broad and diverse array of constituents, including students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents, community members and visitors is essential. 

Working Conditions: Able to work evenings and weekends, as needed.
