Position Focus:

In 1971, Yale University began a unique and historic experiment providing health services to its facility, staff and students through a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on campus. Now, 47 years later, Yale Health has more than 37,000 members including students, staff, faculty and their families who come from every state in the country and almost every country in the world.

Our state-of-the-art facility at 55 Lock Street, built in 2010, is where our members receive most of their care. It is a 144,000 square foot medical facility with over 90 exam rooms, a 24/7 Acute Care Department, a 17-bed inpatient facility with two negative pressure rooms, a diagnostic imaging suite including MR and CT scan, x-ray and ultrasound and a full-service retail pharmacy. It houses our 150+ providers, including 111 primary and consulting physician.

The In-patient and Acute care Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation while caring for our patients maintaining confidentiality and dignity. The Clinical Nurse provides safe, effective evidence based care tailored to the individual needs of the patient and family. As a core member of the delivery team, the clinical nurse partners with the care team to facilitate the coordination of the patient care at the unit level utilizing the principles of patient/family centered care.

The clinical nurse uses nursing process to deliver individualized care incorporating: assessment, problem identification, establishment of desired outcomes, implementation of interventions, and evaluation of care. Position requires clinical expertise, problem solving skills, collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, delegations to appropriate team members and contributes to a positive work environment, including being responsive to the need for change.

Clinical Nurse must demonstrate assessment of patient health care needs upon admission and discharge from unit. Nurse must demonstrate basic nursing skills appropriate to clinical area, including knowledge of tests, procedures, medication administration, IV infusion therapy, including skills to initiate peripheral IV therapy. Demonstrates ability to initiate, document and implement a patient specific care plan. Ensures clinical policies and procedures are consistently followed, initiates new policy when appropriate. Role includes initiatives and services that support organizational and strategic goals. Fosters ongoing improvements of service and a culture that prioritizes safety. Role requires the ability to interface with key clinical partners, ability to make difficult decisions and facilitate resolution.

Essential Duties

1.  The clinical nurse uses the nursing process to deliver high quality comprehensive and individualized care to patients admitted to the Infirmary In patient unit. 2.  Collaborates with members of the multidisciplinary team to support the work of the team, the unit activities, and the accomplishment of positive patient outcomes. 3.  Delegates responsibilities to appropriate members of the care delivery team based upon an understanding of others'' roles, scope of practice, knowledge, and capabilities to ensure optimal utilization of personnel. 4.  Contributes to a positive work environment by being responsive to the need for change. 5.  Maintains a collaborative work relationship with staff members through respect and recognition of cultural and human diversity. 6.  Successfully completes the competency-based orientation within designated time frame. 7.  Identifies self-learning needs and actively participates in meeting them in collaboration with the leadership team. Sets and achieves professional goals. 8.  Delivers excellence in patient care through compliance with all patient safety and regulatory initiatives. 9.  Communicates in a calm professional manner with patients, families, colleagues, members of the care team, and other hospital personnel, accepts and elicits feedback, and works toward resolving problems and clarifying issues and concerns. 10. Uses resources in a fiscally sound manner. 11. Compliance with University, State and federal healthcare regulations.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and a minimum of one year nursing experience in an acute inpatient med surgical unit, or rehab/semi acute facility.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Competent clinical triage skills and critical thinking skills. Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize. Recent IV experience and training.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Evidence of maintenance of professional skill and competency, attendance at educational programs such as seminars and workshops that are appropriate to the field.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Outstanding interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and excellent written skills. Excellent attendance, punctuality and reliability.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Computer proficiency as it relates to the use of an EMR. EKG interpretation skills. CPR certification.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Active membership in professional organizations.

Required Licenses or Certifications

Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut or Connecticut license eligible.

Physical Requirements

May require prolonged standing, walking, use of sight, hearing and touch, moving/lifting patients of varying weights. Requires keyboard use and may require ability to sit in front of a computer screen for long periods of time.
