The Singapore Centre for Life Sciences Engineering, or SCELSE, is a major research centre of excellence with premises situated within Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS). Founded in 2011, it is collectively funded by the Singapore National Research Foundation, Ministry of Education, NTU and NUS.

Through its undertaking of an interdisciplinary approach, combining environmental engineering and life sciences, SCELSE has successfully developed into a leading world class institute known for its research specialization in biofilms, microbial communities, and microbiomes for application in the study of public health and urban ecosystems.

The research centre, hosted by NTU, also partners closely with NUS in their mission to discover, control, and direct the behaviour of microbial biofilm communities for sustainable environmental, engineering, public health, and medical applications. The centre is well equipped with multiple facilities and capacities, made up of an Advanced Biofilm Imaging Facility, High throughput Sequencing Facility, High-Performance Computing infrastructure, and Environmental Bioengineering & Bioreactor facilities, to better enable translation of research into real-life applications and collaboration with major industry players.

A global search has now been started for its next Director to succeed Professor Staffan Kjelleberg. His successor will have an outstanding opportunity to lead the centre, continuingthe efforts in building and developing a globally recognised research centre for biofilms, as well as leading and shaping the overall direction of the centre to further its position globally in terms of academic and intellectual leadership.

Driving the centre’s research agenda and growth will be a key focus for the next Director. The successful candidate will therefore havesignificant international leadership in research and teaching as well as an outstanding track record in advancing world-class research. He/Shewill also possess a strategic mindset to effectively identify new avenues for partnerships and collaboration, experience in recruiting, retaining and running a team ofworld class academics and research scientists, and ideally, a solid track record of successfully securing funding for research.

The prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Postdoctoral Fellowship (LKY PDF) was established in 1991 under the Lee Kuan Yew Endowment Fund. The Fellowship supports and promotes young and outstanding researchers to realise their full potential in the areas of Engineering, Science, Humanities, and Medicine.

The Fellowship will be awarded concurrently with the candidate's appointment as a research staff in NTU.

Eligibility: 

• Excellent academic records and research potential.
• Recent PhD graduates, or with at most 1 postdoctoral training from a reputable university. 

Terms and Conditions: 
• The Fellowship will be tenable for a period of 3 years.  
• In addition to an attractive remuneration, the successful candidate will be awarded a research grant of S$180,000 for research consumables and research related expenditure.
