Stanford University has an immediate opening for a full-time Director of Career Ventures in BEAM, a dedicated team who understands that changes in economic conditions, generational trends, and technology have necessitated a shift from a transactional model of career services toward one focused on building connections. We engage with students to help them design their career pathways, venture into new opportunities, and pursue their job search. BEAM guides students to make connections that will serve them on the path to meaningful work. Career Ventures, one of BEAM’S three collaborative units, is the Hub for customized industry connections and employer engagement. 

Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost and Executive Director within BEAM – Stanford Career Education, the Director of Career Ventures is responsible for providing strategic leadership to the Office of Career Ventures and managing a team of 10 who are responsible for cultivating relationships with employers from various sectors, establishing internship programs, and managing recruiting programs and career events that connect employers with the university’s faculty, students, post docs, and alumni.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve on the executive leadership team and provide guidance and counsel to the AVP and Executive Director of Career Education on matters of policy, procedures, resources, and personnel.
  • Provide strategic leadership to a team of 10 who engage employers from various sectors (Social Impact, Arts/Media and Entertainment, Start-ups and Entrepreneurship, STEM, Business and Government, and Healthcare) in the campus community and connect them with faculty, students, post docs, and alumni. 
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key campus stakeholders and external corporate partners to advance the agenda of engaging students in career development early and often and connecting them with internship and employment opportunities in a variety of sectors. 
  • Develop a strategic plan for employer development to increase internship and employment opportunities in the following employment sectors: Social Impact, Arts/Media and Entertainment, Start-ups and Entrepreneurship, STEM, Business, and Healthcare.
  • Develop programs and systems to engage employers in the campus community and connect them with faculty, students, post docs, and alumni.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Development to identify potential corporate partnerships and development opportunities to support career education initiatives and programs. 
  • Provide career coaching to students, alumni, and post docs.
  • Manage the work of managers and other employees, make hiring decisions, provide coaching and mentoring, and manage performance and staffing levels. 
  • Manage people, processes, and projects, and implement the strategic goals of the unit, department, or school.
  • Provide strategic direction for and manage a major area, school, or cluster of student services programs, including forecasting, planning, and managing program budgets.
  • Develop and oversee programs and tools for delivery of student services or programs.
  • Analyze and develop tools to measure effectiveness of student services and programs.
  • Represent school/department programs and initiatives at senior level meetings, conferences, and to the university to both internal and external constituents.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience in employer relations and/or college recruiting in one of the following areas: Social Impact, Arts/Media and Entertainment, Start-ups and Entrepreneurship, STEM, Business, and Healthcare.
  • Proven record in leading and developing cohesive teams, managing performance and productivity, strategic planning, and contributing to organizational leadership.
  • Knowledge and embodiment of diversity and inclusion best practices. Ability to work collaboratively with individuals and groups from various identities, cultures, and backgrounds
  • Entrepreneurial, creative, and innovative spirit; comfort with change, ambiguity, and risk in a fast pace environment
  • Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management 
  • Self-awareness, in terms of understanding one’s own culture, identity, biases, prejudices, power, privilege and stereotypes
  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills
  • Awareness of generational differences in work styles
  • Knowledge of trends in internships, employment, economy, effective interventions, technology, and industry networks.
  • Knowledge of employment resources and publications 
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Box, and Google Drive; 
  • Advanced customer service skills
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience
  • Understanding of financial transactions
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
  • Demonstrates willingness to challenge and change institutional practices that present barriers to different groups.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Experience in higher education setting.
  • Master’s degree in Education, Business, or related field. 

Working Conditions:  

  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
