Job Summary

We are seeking a Lab Manager for the Tsao lab at Caltech. The Tsao lab (http://tsaolab.caltech.edu/) studies the neural mechanisms underlying vision in non-human primates and mice. We study questions related to object recognition, spatial perception, memory, and consciousness. We use multiple approaches including functional MRI (fMRI), electrophysiology, widefield and two-photon imaging, and mathematical modeling. A possibility exists for a highly motivated candidate to pursue an independent research project while performing Lab Manager duties.

Job Duties

  • Onboard new lab members
  • Work with Non-Human Primates
  • Hands-on coordination of our animal colony. Overseeing the health and welfare of the animals, interfacing with animal care and veterinary staff
  • Perform positive reinforcement training of animals
  • Pairing animals and monitoring behavioral interactions
  • Assist with surgeries and anesthesia, preparing and administering medication
  • Train animals on behavioral tasks
  • Assist with fMRI experiments and other ongoing projects in the lab
  • Assist with perfusion and necrospy
  • Responsible for purchasing and maintenance of equipment and supplies and office space
  • Maintenance of laboratory records
  • Coordinate projects with other offices and labs on campus to ensure compliance and safety
  • Train new students and postdocs and certify lab personnel for specific procedures such as handling of Controlled substances and use of MRI equipment

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience in one or more of the following: animal husbandry, animal surgery, animal behavior and/or training, biomedical research, and laboratory management
  • An interest in working with non-human primates is an absolute must
  • Sense of responsibility, excellent organizational skills, love for working with animals, and desire to contribute to understanding the brain required
  • Pre-employment physical required
