Overview

The Chan Laboratory in the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics seeks applicants for a Research Specialist I or II. Our research uses high thoughput genomics to understand the early stages of mouse development, including building new technologies and computational tools. Our current focus is to perform lineage tracing experiments using a CRISPR-Cas9 technology coupled with single cell RNA-seq to observe the cell fate map for embryogenesis.

The Research Specialist will manage the lab, provide general research support to the lab and work with the PI and other lab members to design and execute experiments. Lab management responsibilities will include organizing the lab, increasing lab efficiency, ordering/inventory, maintaining equipment, and training new lab members. The Research Specialist will also perform molecular biology procedures, including DNA/RNA preparation, PCR, cloning plasmids and preparing sequencing libraries. Tissue culture experience, specifically with mESC culture is a plus.

The rank and salary will be commensurate with experience. Salary will include the full benefits package. The position is open and review of applications will begin immediately. Anticipated start date is 1st of January 2021 or later.

This will be a one-year term position, with the possibility of renewal given satisfactory job performance and continued funding.

Responsibilities

Specific duties include:

  • Maintaining the lab infrastructure, organization, and management, including:
    • Ordering/restocking inventory.
    • Basic maintenance of lab equipment.
    • Organizing/coordinating lab administration, e.g. organizing lab cleanups, group meetings etc.
    • Training new lab members on proper lab protocols and procedures.
    • Sample preparation for experiments, preparing buffers, etc.
  • Participation in experimental design, execution and analysis of experiments.
  • Presenting data in lab meetings, external meetings, and assisting with the preparation of publications.

Qualifications

Essential requirements/skills:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology or related field.
  • Demonstrated skills in molecular biology.
  • Ability to plan and manage a research project.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and optimize protocols, and manage projects.
  • Ability to work independently as part of a larger team.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Preferred knowledge/skills:

  • Experience in tissue culture, especially mESC culture.
  • Experience with CRISPR-Cas technologies.
  • Experience with flow cytometry.

The final candidate will be required to pass a background check.
