Description

The Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is accepting applications for a Senior Instructional Professor (open rank) who will teach in the College’s Humanities General Education Curriculum, the so-called Humanities Core (HUMA). This is a full-time position with a three-year renewable term, to start September 1, 2021. The annual teaching load will be at least four courses/sections.

In addition to teaching, the Senior Instructional Professor will serve as the Humanities Core Pedagogy Coordinator, responsible – in coordination with the Master of the Humanities Collegiate Division – for planning, organizing, and running pedagogical training and professional development for instructors in all of the Humanities Core sequences. The HUMA Pedagogy Coordinator will work closely with the College Writing Program on providing writing instruction to first-year students as well as collaborate with the staff of the Chicago Center for Teaching on offering orientation programming for new HUMA Core instructors. Duties include conducting and documenting performance evaluations of Instructional Professors and Lecturers who are represented by the Service Employee International Union (SEIU), and training and mentoring of Humanities Teaching Fellows and graduate student lecturers. The Senior Instructional Professor may also be required to assume the position of Core Chair, who is responsible for managing and coordinating all aspects of a Humanities Core sequence, including the supervision and evaluation of both graduate-student and unionized lecturers.

Required is a PhD in a relevant humanistic discipline, extensive teaching experience at the college or post-secondary level, and evidence of pedagogical excellence. The successful candidate needs to demonstrate the ability to articulate transparent and effective learning objectives for her/his courses, design clear and coherent syllabi as well as lesson plans, select appropriate course materials, conceive  effective assessments and evaluations of student learning. Furthermore, the successful candidate should be capable of communicating a compelling vision of the curricular philosophy of the Humanities Core as a whole. More particularly, the successful candidate should have a background in writing pedagogy as well as experience with inclusive teaching and its pedagogy. Given the expansion of online teaching, the successful candidate should be proficient with a number of relevant teaching technologies and possess experience with assessing the efficacy of remote instruction. The HUMA Pedagogy Coordinator must also be proficient in producing instructional materials and documentation for written and online media.

The non-course responsibilities require effort beyond the nine months of the academic year, including planning pedagogy programming for the Core Forum in September and serving as liaison with the College Summer Quarter.

To apply for this position candidates must submit their application through the University of Chicago's Interfolio jobs board at apply.interfolio.com/81131.  Applicants must upload a current curriculum vitae; a cover letter of interest; sample student teaching evaluations; a statement of teaching philosophy describing the applicant’s methods and goals in teaching a text in the Humanities Core; samples of pedagogical materials (syllabi, assignments, assessments, etc.) that demonstrate the candidate’s approach to teaching and pedagogical expertise; and the names and contact information of three references whose recommendation letters may be solicited.

Application deadline is January 4, 2021. Only complete applications will be considered.  Please contact Norah O’Donnell (neo2@uchicago.edu) with any questions. The position is contingent upon budgetary approval.
