Description:

The Department of Physiology and the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment in the area of Integrative Physiology. This is a joint appointment between the Department (51%) and the Centre (49%) at the rank of Assistant Professor. The expected start date is July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter. The successful candidate will be considered for appointment as the James B. Bassingthwaighte Chair in Integrative Physiology (details below), a new endowed Chair position at the University of Toronto. The appointment as Chair will be for an initial 5-year term, renewable following a favorable review.

Candidates must have a PhD in Physiology or another relevant field of study by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with demonstrated research experience and an emerging track record in quantitative and/or integrative systems physiology at the level of the cell or organism. Candidates must demonstrate a record of excellence in both research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths https://www.physiology.utoronto.ca/.

We seek an outstanding individual to initiate and lead an innovative program in integrative physiology that employs computational/mathematical/physiomic modeling approaches to help understand mechanisms underlying transitions from healthy and diseased states in cells or organisms. The successful candidate will mount and lead a program to develop quantitative approaches for answering important physiological questions via collaborations within a multidisciplinary team that might include, for example, mathematicians, computer scientists, bioengineers, stem cell and systems biologists. The appointee will be expected to pursue innovative research at the highest international level; to establish a strong, independent, competitive, externally funded research program; and to participate actively in departmental and affiliate institute activities.

Excellence in research will be determined by the quality of articles submitted in the application; output and impactful research or a research pipeline that meets international standards; publications in top ranked, internationally recognized, and field-relevant academic journals; presentations at significant conferences; awards and accolades; and strong endorsements by referees of high international stature.

Excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level is required. To this end, candidates must provide a teaching dossier to include a statement of teaching philosophy and interests, sample syllabi, and teaching evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letter of reference. Other teaching-related activities could refer to previous experience as a teaching assistant or course instructor, leading workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or awards for oral presentations and posters at conferences.

The successful candidate may have additional appointments with other partner or research institutes within the Toronto Area Health Sciences Network (TASHN).  Potential partners include Medicine by Design, The Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research, The Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and affiliated teaching hospitals near the University campus.

Outstanding candidates with demonstrated research excellence relevant to modeling of physiologic systems will be considered for the James B. Bassingthwaighte Chair in Integrative Physiology.  An emerging track record of collaborative science, successful program building, and research productivity and excellence, demonstrated through the application materials, is essential. Through research and scholarly activities, the Chair holder will position the Department of Physiology and its partner institutions as global leaders in knowledge and technology generation and translation in the area of integrative physiology.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
