Research Associate - Cardiovascular Sciences
This position is for a talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral molecular/cell biologist or physiologist to work on a BHF Programme Grant on Redox-regulated adaptive pathways in heart failure. The project will involve the use of iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and “engineered heart muscle (EHM)” as model systems to investigate biological mechanisms. We therefore seek to appoint an individual with a strong background in cell and molecular biology (rather than tissue engineering), e.g.cloning, viral transduction, CrispR/Cas9 approaches, immunoblotting, microscopy of tissue sections. Previous experience with iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes or EHM is highly desirable. Experience with muscle force measurements and/or the use of in vivo models of disease would be helpful.
The postholder will be part of a multi-disciplinary research grouping working on several different aspects of cardiovascular pathophysiology, with access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities within the King's BHF Centre of Research Excellence.
This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31/03/2025.
This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

Skills, knowledge, and experience
- PhD in a relevant biological sciences project
- Strong background in cell/molecular biology
- Good written presentation skills, communication skills (written & verbal), and good IT skills
- Broad molecular biology research experience (e.g. cloning, RT-PCR)
- Broad cell biology experience, e.g. immunoblotting, primary cell culture, confocal microscopy, immunofluorescence
- Successful completion of research projects (published papers in high Impact Factor journals)
- Self-motivated, able to work independently, as well as willing and able to work as part of a team
- Commitment to continuing personal and professional development,
- Able to carry out know/learnt techniques unsupervised, and flexible/able to change in current professional context
- Able to plan and prioritise workload and keep clear and well-organised laboratory notes and records
- Background in cardiovascular biology
- Experience of working with iPS-derived cardiomyocytes or engineered heart muscle
- Experience of working with in-vivo models of disease or gene-modification
*Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
