PROJECT MACHINIST, Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC), to join a major initiative to develop advanced superconducting magnets and the first net-energy fusion energy device. Will work in the PSFC’s substantial machine shop to fabricate a wide range of components, fixtures, tooling, structures, and other hardware required for large-scale superconducting magnet development and testing. The PSFC is a facility at the forefront of plasma physics and fusion energy research. It is comprised of a team of almost 200 top-tier students, scientists, and engineering staff jointly pursuing fusion research at national laboratory-like scale. It is a fast-paced, team-oriented environment working to achieve fusion energy on an accelerated timescale.
REQUIRED: a two-year technical day school degree with numerical control machine training; at least ten years of applicable experience as a machinist; experience with CAM software and operating 5 axis machines; an R&D background and experience; experience fabricating tooling and fixtures for prototype or short-run production cycles; experience working with aluminum, steel, Inconel, copper, molybdenum, tungsten, G10, and fiber-reinforced plastics; familiarity with modern machine tools (e.g., programming of CAM milling machines and lathes) and the setup, maintenance, and operation of such machine tools; experience using lathes and multi-axis milling machines outfitted with ProtoTRAK controllers; comfort using horizontal and vertical milling machines with manual controls only; ability to use horizontal and vertical band saws, belt/disc sanders, rotary grinders, and buffers which are typical in a machine shop; experienced with speeds and feeds and the selection of proper tooling; and the ability to handle and complete multiple tasks with minimal supervision. Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M.
Must be able to work overtime for extended hours and weekends during occasional major project sprints.
