Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, the Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer (CDEIO) will lead the development and implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and resources. This leadership position will support the School’s strategic goal to proactively foster an inclusive learning and working climate where all staff and students have an opportunity to succeed. The Chief DEI Officer (CDEIO) will engage students and staff to advance policies and promote mindsets and behaviors that value and support diversity, equity, and inclusion. The DEI Officer will also collaborate with stakeholders to drive training with outcome assessments of cultural competency, gender differences, disability, sexual harassment, and other areas designed to increase awareness of and support for equity and inclusion values.

- Drive action-oriented strategic planning and serve in an advisory role to the Dean and senior leadership on diversity, equity, and inclusivity matters.
- Develop evaluation tools and outcome metrics to assess DEI programs.
- Promote environments and develop relationships that foster safe conversations, trust, and respect within the Penn Vet community.
- Serve as the main point of contact and central resource for students and staff on DEI matters.
- Collaborate and communicate with the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Diversity.
- Advise the Associate Dean of Education on core and elective curricula.
- Provide strategic input to the Office for Students to increase recruitment of and provide support for underrepresented students.
- Strengthen and operationalize existing and new diversity programing, including but not limited to: training, seminars, onboarding, social events, and alumni engagement.
- Collaborate with the Director of Shelter Medicine & Community Engagement on community outreach and pipeline programs.
- Work with the Communications team to communicate and promote DEI priorities and programs both internally and externally.
- Lead the School’s Diversity Council and leverage this group to advance School-wide goals.
- Maximize collaboration with DEI leaders from other Penn schools, peer veterinary schools, and veterinary DEI affinity organizations.
- Develop and strengthen relationships with the University’s cultural centers and resources.
Masters or PhD or other advanced degree and 7 to 10 years of experience required preferably in social justice, education, sociology, public administration, human resource management, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Goal-oriented individual with experience in strategic planning, implementation, and outcome assessment of diversity, equity, and inclusivity initiatives and programs in a complex organization. Ability to build relationships and inspire others to share in a commitment to social justice and community building.
