£21,208 - £24,681 per annum, pro rata REF: ACF/AHES/024/20
SRUC is unique in Scotland and one of the largest organisations of its kind in Europe. Our ambitious and exciting vision is to work at local, national and international levels, leading innovation and sustainable development in agriculture and rural sectors.
We are currently seeking a Horticultural Technician at SRUC’s Glasgow Campus at Glasgow Botanic Gardens. The successful candidate will be part of a small, dedicated Horticulture and Landscape team. This team is part of a wider Horticulture and Landscape team, which sits within the wider Department of Agriculture, Horticulture and Engineering Science at SRUC’s Central Faculty.
The role will involve the preparation of practical and digital material for use in Higher Education student teaching as well as purchase of equipment and materials required for teaching. The job also includes dealing directly with students and helping them to prepare project work and all aspects of horticultural teaching practice and lecturer support. There is also maintenance and development of specific areas of the Glasgow Botanic gardens that would be the responsibility of the post holder to maintain. These areas are used by students to provide a showcase for their work as well as contributing to the aesthetic interest of the Gardens and the post holder would be expected to oversee student activity in this area. As well, the maintenance, cleanliness and operation of two dedicated polytunnels would be the responsibility of the post holder throughout the year.
With the blended teaching model now operating across SRUC (whereby both face-to-face and online teaching are delivered to students), the need for an IT-literate technician with high-level skills (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint minimum) as well as an ability to learn new software teaching and learning platforms is required. The position holder will be required to be flexible in their approach to their work and be open-minded to change.
Qualifications and experience required:
A qualification in Horticulture is essential for this post and a postgraduate teaching qualification is desirable. Practical experience in horticultural nursery activity is required as is a working knowledge of plant propagation, plant production and maintenance in glasshouse, nursery, landscape and field.
A clean UK Driving Licence and/or the ability to drive a minibus (UK licence category D) would be desirable.
This is a part time role of 18.5 hours per week and is fixed term for two years.
