A vacancy has arisen for an Analyst within the Drug Control Centre (DCC) in the Department of Analytical, Environmental & Forensic Sciences, School of Population Health & Environmental Sciences.

The DCC is the only World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory in the UK and played a key role in the London 2012 Olympics, Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2015 Rugby World Cup anti-doping screening programmes. The DCC is also accredited by the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS) as a testing laboratory, in accordance with ISO 17025.

Under the supervision of the Senior Analyst (Immunoassay), the postholder will analyse biological samples in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code’s International Standard for Laboratories and World Anti-Doping Agency and ISO 17025 accreditations.  Staff at this level are required to carry out a range of activities using standard laboratory operating procedures and working to short timescales.  To comply with the principals of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) at all times. Staff are expected to carry out other specialist duties beyond the core requirements of the job as directed by senior staff.

  • Perform day-to-day immunoassay procedures and confirmatory analysis related to analysis of biological samples, including report checking in the DCC.
  • Assist with validations of immunoassays under the direction of the Senior Analyst (Immunoassay) and Laboratory Operations Manager
  • Set up and operate the immunoassay instruments used in the Centre, as appropriate.
  • Work as a conscientious and committed member of the team in order to achieve the aims of the DCC.
  • To be committed to your own personal career development.
  • Liaise with the Operations Officers as needed to ensure the smooth running of the work undertaken in the DCC.
  • To perform other duties as shall be assigned from time to time by the Laboratory Operations Manager or Head of the DCC for the efficient and reliable operation of the Centre.

Key responsibilities

The post holder is a member of the DCC analyst family, King’s Forensics and the departments/ School’s professional services team, providing high quality analytical support around for Anti-Doping, Forensic and Clinical and Quality Assurance services within the DCC, King’s Forensics, based in the Department of Analytical, Environmental & Forensic Science. They will:

  • Provide recognised specialist analytical expertise in immunoassay techniques, where the primary focus will be on operating a routine analytical service, supporting the UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) contract. There will be a need for liaison with staff members across the laboratory.
  • Perform sophisticated routine analysis in compliance with ISO17025 and WADA requirements
  • Be responsive to changing priorities and an evolving laboratory environment, maximising the efficiency of the analytical support being provided
  • Forge relationships with other analysts in a chosen area of analytical speciality, in order to contribute to method development and adoption of good laboratory practice (GLP)
  • Foster a stimulating, innovative and inclusive cultural environment across the DCC laboratories enabling analytical colleagues to thrive and develop, ensuring that processes and policies are visible, accessible and transparent
  • Actively engage in Continuing Professional Development and training initiatives.

The post holder is expected to manage their own workload working closely with the Laboratory Operations Manager and Senior Analyst to this end and is expected to be flexible in anticipating and responding to shifting and competing demands on their and the wider team’s time. It is expected that the post will work with some supervision and will refer to their line manager/s for advice on issues which fall outside existing regulatory or policy frameworks.
