Overview

The School of Education is seeking an experienced Science Technician to join the interdisciplinary technical services team supporting teaching and research programs.

The Laboratory Technician is accountable for delivering scientific support to enhance student learning outcomes. The role provides technical expertise and assistance to academics and students regarding laboratory processes and health and safety requirements for the delivery of scientific learning activities and applications.

Working primarily in our science department on the Joondalup campus, this position would also suit someone with the flexibility to be involved in other discipline areas supported by the School as required.

The primary duties of the role include:

  • Liaising with science academics on their needs for practical work and maintaining an efficient system for use and allocation of materials and equipment;
  • Providing support to science academics on technical components of the curriculum;
  • Advising and assisting academics in safety matters relating to science laboratories and processes;
  • Preparing risk assessments for scientific methods, workspaces and learning activities;
  • Assisting academics and students with the use of science-related computer applications and learning technologies;
  • Preparing and constructing teaching aids/resources as requested, such as chemicals, equipment and materials;
  • Assisting academics in instructing students on laboratory techniques and use/care of scientific equipment;
  • Assisting students with additional needs to facilitate their participation;
  • Assisting in the resolution of technical problems generated during lessons; and
  • Setting up displays and experiments to promote the school science program at events such as open days and community promotional stalls.

All technical staff are required to undertake adequate measures to ensure compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 and related University requirements (including Safety, Health and Wellbeing Objectives and Targets).

The successful candidate will also demonstrate personal attributes that are congruent with the University’s values of Integrity, Respect, Rational Inquiry and Personal Excellence.

The successful candidate will also be required to:

  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance before the commencement of employment;
  • hold or get a present Working with Children Check;
    and have a Certificate III in Laboratory Skills or equivalent qualification or experience; and
  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy

Benefits & Remuneration

This full time, ongoing position attracts remuneration of $72,103 - $80,122 pa (Hew 5) – (based on 2020 salaries) plus 17% University superannuation contribution.
