About the position
A position as a PhD Research Fellow in Computational NanoPhysics is available at the Department of Physics, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim. The position is financed by the European Union and NTNU. The project is associated with the European Union Future and Emerging Technology Project (FET-Open) project Nanolace (www. nanolace.eu), which began 1. January 2020. The aim of the Nanolace project is to use matter wave beams for mask based lithography with nanometer resolution.
The position reports to Prof. Ingve Simonsen as the main scientific supervisor of the research.
Duties of the position
The work of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow is centered around further theoretical development and numerical testing of a near field binary holographic technique that we have developed (see e.g. https://arxiv.org/abs/1804.06910) for the design of masks for shaping matter waves for the purpose of using them in lithographic applications. The development of the mask structures, including the parameters defining them, will be done in close collaboration with experimental partners. Based on the designs proposed by the PhD Research Fellow, other partners in the project will manufacture the mask structures and evaluate their pref romance in the laboratory. Work on code optimization, parallelization and use of High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructures are expected. There will also be the possibility to work on various aspects of wave and atom scattering problems.
Required selection criteria
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in physics or equivalent education or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.
Persons with knowledge within computational physics, scientific computing, and wave scattering are particularly encouraged to apply. Strong programming skills are considered important for the position. Applicants are required to justify their candidateship by explicitly explaining their personal motivation and academic aptitude for pursuing a doctoral degree within this research field.
Excellent English skills, written and spoken, are required. Applicants from non-European countries where English is not the official language must present an official language test report. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
- TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
- IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
- CAE/CPE: grade A or B.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.
- Master’s degree in computational or theoretical physics, optics or electrical engineering.
- Good knowledge of programming languages like modern Fortran, Julia, Python and/or C/C++ is required (knowledge should be documented in the application).
- Proficiency in both oral and written communication skills in English is required
- The candidate will be expected to be able to take up the position on 1-Apr-2021 at the latest, an earlier starting date is possible.
- The candidate will participate in teaching of physics courses and should therefore have a keen interest in teaching
Preferred selection criteria
- Candidates with a background in computational physics and/or scattering theory will be preferred
- Background in scientific computing and in particular scattering theory and scattering calculations are desired
- Knowledge and experience in numerical solution of integral equations is an advantage

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 4 years, including 25% compulsory teaching duties at the Department of Physics.
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Physics (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phfy) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
