The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences is seeking to recruit a part-time researcher to the “MERIT: a fraMEwoRk to model and IncenTivise cyber security investments” project funded by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in collaboration with the Research Institute in Sociotechnical Cyber Security (RISCS) under the call for proposals “Economics and Incentives”. The successful candidate will join the Internet of Things and Security (ISEC) Research Group, working on designing and developing decision support methodologies to invest in cyber security for SMEs.

The MERIT framework addresses the challenge of how to take better cyber security investment decisions. It aims at minimising cyber security risks by optimally investing a budget in implementing and maintaining cyber controls. This work will undertake a multi-disciplinary approach by utilising both economics and cyber security engineering insights to significantly extend the state-of-the-art in decision support for cyber security spending.

In addition to supporting the research project, the position will serve as a platform for the researcher to develop their career and profile in the field of cyber economics. The potential for the development of knowledge and skills in cyber security risk management and remediation of cyber-attacks may help the researcher develop an independent research agenda. The successful candidate will work under the direction of Dr Manos Panaousis, Associate Professor in Cyber Security.

The successful applicant will demonstrate experience and knowledge of at least one of the following areas:

  • Information security management
  • Mathematical optimisation or Game theory
  • Security economics

Main Responsibilities/Activities

  • To design and develop the novel MERIT framework for investing in cyber security controls for SMEs.
  • To contribute to the preparation of a journal publication to present the outcomes of the project.
  • To present the project results in RISCS events.

For informal enquiries please contact Dr Manos Panaousis at e.panaousis@gre.ac.uk.

We are looking for people who can help us deliver our mission of transforming lives through inspired teaching and research, through our values.
