Professor of British Cultures

The position is attached to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) at the University of St.Gallen. The successful candidate will take up his or her position on 1 February 2022.

The appointee's research focuses on British and Commonwealth Cultures in comparative, global and/or postcolonial contexts. While a background in the humanities is desirable, the disciplinary orientation of the position is open. Possible subject areas include - but are not limited to - cultural studies, literary studies, history, philosophy, human geography and social anthropology. A focus on the 20th and/or 21st century would be an advantage, in order to advance understanding of the current constellations and conflicts in the English-speaking world.

Requirements: An excellent PhD thesis, a second monograph or equivalent demonstrating a high standard of scholarship, first-class articles and an outstanding track record in university teaching.

The teaching load is 8 hours per week. Applicants are expected to teach interdisciplinary courses — mainly in the University's Contextual Studies Programme — and to be committed to the University's self-administration.

The University of St.Gallen offers BA, MA and PhD programmes in English and German. Teaching can be in English exclusively. The University's administrative language is German. If the successful candidate has no prior knowledge of German, he or she will be expected to acquire a passive knowledge of the language within two years.

The University of St.Gallen is an equal opportunity employer. We specifically encourage women and applicants with backgrounds underrepresented among our current senior faculty to apply.

Further details on the position are available from the Chair of the Appointments Committee, Professor Dr. Caspar Hirschi (facultyposition@unisg.ch).

Applications should include a cover letter and the usual supporting documents (CV, list of publications, teaching evaluations, yet no copies of publications and references). They should be submitted online via www.unisg.ch/professorships at the latest by 30 November 2020.
