About the position

The Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management (IØT) invites applications for a permanent position as Professor in Project Management.

The department is organised into six sections:

  • Managerial Economics, Finance and Operations Research
  • Health, Safety and Environment Management (HSE)
  • Strategy and Business Development
  • Operations Management
  • Experts in Teamwork
  • Section of Economics and management (NTNU Gjøvik)

The position is part of the Operations Management section. This is a cooperation-oriented research group with several internationally recognized researchers who are active in many national and international research projects and programs, financed by for example EC H2020 and the Research Council of Norway.

The section cooperates closely with both industry and governmental bodies. The staff teaches in the 2-year international Master of Science program Project Management (PROMAN), the 5-year Master of Technology program in Industrial Economics and Technology Management (INDØK) and the Bachelor program in Logistics Engineering, which are all managed by the department. The section also teaches courses in other master programs at NTNU.

The department’s (IØT) mission is to carry out educational and research activities at a high international level. IØT’s core activity is in the intersection between technology/natural sciences, business economics, management, and HSE, aiming to promote sustainable value creation in technology-based areas in industry, business and the public sector in Norway.

The position as Professor reports to the Head of Department of the department.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Research in the scientific area of project management, resulting in publications in internationally acknowledged journals
  • Initiate, participate in, and manage externally funded research projects
  • Contributing to, fronting and leading the development of the research area Project Management
  • Teaching in the scientific area of project management on a bachelor, master and PhD level in all the study programmes taught by the section, with a specific focus on the study program in Project Management
  • Taking part in managing and developing the study program in Project Management
  • Supervision of bachelor, master and doctoral students
  • Exam preparation and evaluation
  • Administrative tasks

Qualification requirements

Project management is usually defined as consisting of project planning and control, project organization and design, and project leadership. At the Operations Management section we primarily focus on the last two.

The criteria described in the Faculty guidelines for the assessment of academic competence for Professor positions at the Faculty of Economics and Management, NTNU, have to be fulfilled.

To qualify for this Professor position in Project Management we require in addition:

1)     A Norwegian PhD or equivalent foreign PhD in Project Management or Project-based organizing.

2)     Documented scientific competence in at least two of the following four areas:

  • Projects as temporary structures and teams.
  • Project portfolio and program management.
  • Projects in multiple organizational- and inter-organisational contexts.
  • Projects as instruments for change, learning, and development.

Applicants must explicitly document the relevance of their research experience and their publications related to the above areas in the application letter.

3)     Documented research competence relevant for at least one of the technology specializations of the students in the department’s master program in Industrial Economics and Technology Management, (see https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/mtiot for a description of the master program).

4)     Publication of research in recognized and relevant international scientific journals. Scientific articles published in the last five years (excluding statutory leave) with relevance for the research areas indicated above will weigh strongest in the evaluation and ranking. We desire an active researcher to fill this position, and we consider the scientific publication record in light of the length of the applicant’s academic career.

5)     Documented experience in university-level teaching and supervision at master and PhD level. See more about the pedagogical qualifications below.

6)     Demonstrated skills in qualitative social science methods.

7)     Documented experience in initiating and managing research projects.

8)     Collaboration experience with industry and/or public sector.

9)     International collaboration experience and an internationally oriented mindset.

The following qualifications will count favourably in the evaluation of the candidate:

I.      Demonstrated skills in application of mixed research methods.

II.     Willingness to collaborate with engineering disciplines at NTNU and experience with such work.

Other requirements:

Basic qualifications in the discipline of education are required. Anyone who is appointed without having formal basic qualifications in the discipline of education (formerly referred to as practical qualifications in teaching at university level) and who is unable to document equivalent qualifications is required to complete an approved course within two years of appointment. Pedagogical qualifications will be evaluated. The evaluation will be based on documented pedagogical material, pedagogical education, presentational skills in your scientific work and experience from PhD - or master level supervision, and teaching and pedagogical background of other sorts. The overall quality of the qualifications will be evaluated.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU. The university provides such courses. Following this, the candidate should be able and willing to teach and do research in Norwegian.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Professor (code 1013) is normally from NOK 630 530,- to NOK 900 000,- per year, depending on competence. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The total obligation to work is divided into research, teaching and administration. The division between these fields of work obligation will vary, but approximately equal time should be devoted to research and teaching.

The person appointed must comply with the decisions about changes due to developments in the subject area, and the organizational changes that may result from decisions regarding the university's activities.

Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite. The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the institution.

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.

If, for any reason, you have taken a career break or have had an atypical career and wish to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognizing that the quantity of your research may be reduced as a result.

After the application deadline, an internal committee will do a shortlisting of the applicants. This evaluation will be sent to an external expert committee, and only the best-qualified applicants will be assessed. The best qualified candidates will be invited to do a trial lecture and have an interview at the department.
