Science Unit, Core Curriculum and General Education Office

In August 2015, the University established a Science Unit to strengthen teaching, research, and service efforts in the natural sciences. Currently, the Science Unit offers courses in the “Science, Technology, Mathematics and Society” cluster for students to fulfill the University’s General Education requirements. From 2019-20 onwards, the Unit offers a Common Core course, CCC8013 The Process of Science, which is a graduation requirement as part of Lingnan’s Core Curriculum (course information available at: https://www.ln.edu.hk/scienceunit/ccgecourses.php).

The appointee is expected to contribute to the teaching mission of the Science Unit. In particular, the successful candidate will play a major role in the development and teaching of the laboratory component of The Process of Science. The main responsibilities of the appointee include engaging in formal teaching and undertaking teaching-related activities (attending staff meetings, facilitating science workshops for staff and students, setting of test papers, examination invigilation, and marking of scripts).

There will also be opportunities for the appointee to develop and teach courses in:

  1. Science, Technology, Mathematics and Society cluster and
  2. Minor in Environmental and Scientific Literacy as well. The appointee is expected to be on board in August 2021.

General Requirements

Candidates should have

  1. a PhD degree in a relevant natural science discipline;
  2. relevant experience in teaching, especially at the non-majors general education level;
  3. capability to develop and teach creative teaching materials; and
  4. excellent interpersonal and communication skills for developing meaningful collaborations with students and colleagues in a liberal arts setting. Experience in developing and working with “citizen science” projects would be a plus. Candidates expecting a PhD degree within the next six months may also apply.

Preference will be given to those with teaching and course/programme management experience at university level in the natural sciences or related areas.

Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointees. Appointment will be normally made on a fixed-term contract of up to two years.
