About the role

Reporting to the Manager, Counselling the role of the Counsellor / AccessAbility Advisor is to provide a hybrid of wellbeing services to the regional campuses, which will be a combination of counselling support and AccessAbility advising to students.

The Counsellor has responsibility for the delivery of high-quality service delivery to students, involving crisis intervention, assessment, counselling and referral practices. AccessAbility Advisors are required to assess and provide a range of solution-focussed outcomes for students living with disability or other equity issues; provide advice and guidance to both staff and students to enable the successful implementation of recommended solutions; and contribute to continuous. This position is based in Mildura, however, the Student and Wellbeing division operates as a multi-campus team and, as such, travel to other campuses may be required.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting individual counselling sessions with students (online and face to face) including students with complex presentations and providing services to support students living with complex circumstances (physical, sensory, medical, neurological, and intellectual disabilities, mental illness or learning difficulties) including consultation, formal assessment, developing Learning Access Plans, liaising with academics and administrative services, providing strategic advice and guidance.
  • Provide case management support to students presenting from a refugee background as required and culturally sensitive services to other equity cohorts of students.
  • Participating in the counselling triage system, or any other system of intake and/or screening implemented at the service.

Skills & Experience

To be successful you will have:

  • Qualifications in Psychology, Social Work or equivalent including registration/membership the relevant body e.g. registration with AHPRA, or membership with AASW and experience, post-qualification, in assessment and therapeutic intervention, including working with complex client presentations and diverse client groups.
  • Extensive experience and capability working with people living with disability and/or complex life circumstances, including knowledge of relevant legislation and policy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially the capacity to work collaboratively and cooperatively in small teams.
