Role Description

We welcome applications from talented individuals interested in this exciting Research Fellow post, with the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out the associated research activities. In this project, a new High Productivity Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing (HPWAAM) process will be developed to manufacture large-scale structures with high accuracy and deposition rates of up to 15kg/hr. This post focuses on the development of a new high productivity wire + arc additive manufacturing (HPWAAM) process.  The post holder will also provide technical support to the project partners for evaluation of the HPWAAM with real industrial applications.

Cranfield Manufacturing (which includes major activities in Materials) is following the ambitious strategy of developing a roadmap for a Sustainable Manufacturing Sector for 2050 by applying fundamental science and thought leadership via conceiving and maturing the concepts of Smart, Clean and Green manufacturing solutions agnostically across all sectors and through all tiers of the supply chain with SMEs as well as OEMs. This is to support the national aspiration of Net Zero UK by 2050. We offer world-class and niche post-graduate level research, education, training and consultancy. We are unique in our multi-disciplinary approach by bringing together design, materials’ technology and management expertise. We link fundamental materials research with manufacturing to develop novel technologies and improve the science base of the manufacturing research. Our capabilities are unique, with a focus on simulation and modelling, and sustainability.  They also include work in composite manufacture, metallic glasses, nano-materials (graphene, coatings and sensors), low energy casting, thermal barrier coatings and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM).

This key role will involve working closely with project partners, presenting the outcomes of research in project meetings and preparing deliverable reports and journal publications.  You will also be responsible for the delivery of solutions to complex technical problems, such as designing experiments and process trials as well as considerable project planning and interaction with others.  Additionally you will be expected to publish high quality journal papers, support MSc and PhD students within the Centre, and actively contribute to new projects & other development activities.

You will have a PhD (or close to completion) in additive manufacturing or similar, with demonstrable relevant achievements within process development of additive manufacturing, material characterisation and ideally wire based metal additive manufacturing.  You will be focused on the successful delivery of the project, be proactive and enthusiastic, & committed to delivering high quality research, with a collaborative approach.  In return, the successful applicant will have exciting opportunities for career development in this key position, and to be at the forefront ofworld leading research and education, joining a supportive team and environment.
