The University of Gloucestershire has a long and distinguished record in Sports and Exercise.  Our teaching portfolio covers a broad range of sports and exercise sciences, sports therapy, physical education, sports coaching, and sports leadership and business.  We have a substantial programme of applied research, submitting to both the 2014 and 2021 REF exercises.  We have invested in excellent facilities.  We have over 800 students, studying programmes from undergraduate to PhD, achieving high levels of student satisfaction and improved rates of employability.  We have an outstanding network of strong partnerships with sports national governing bodies, professional bodies such as CIMSPA, and a variety of professional sports organisations locally and nationally.

We are looking to appoint a new Head of School who can build on these strengths, working with colleagues to create a thriving, successful, distinctive future for the School in a challenging and competitive environment for higher education.

You will have an academic background related to one or more of the academic elements of the School, and a strong track record of academic leadership, management and delivery.  You will be enthusiastic about developing a portfolio of courses that is high quality and innovative in developing across disciplinary and professional boundaries. You will have a keen understanding of how to succeed in the competitive climate in which sports education operates, with a proven ability to drive student recruitment, retention and satisfaction.  You will also have a track record in building motivated teams of academic staff committed to ensuring a great student experience, with a demonstrably inclusive leadership style.

Reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the Head of School is a member of the University’s Academic Leadership Group, which in partnership with the University Executive provides academic leadership for the University.  As such you will play a significant part in the senior decision making of the University.

At the University of Gloucestershire, we pride ourselves on being an academic community which values positive human relationships, promoting belonging, and supporting individuals to flourish. In challenging times for the university sector, we continue to thrive, achieving real progress and success in student satisfaction, graduate employment and community impact.

Company

With more than 10,000 students and 1,000 staff, the University of Gloucestershire has played a vibrant part in its community for over 150 years.

The University was granted university status in 2001, and predecessor colleges have been delivering quality education in Gloucestershire since 1834. Alumni include Turner Prize nominee Cornelia Parker and Winter Olympic Gold Medallist Lizzy Yarnold.

The University of Gloucestershire's roots lie in teacher training, and it continues to lead in its field today, with Ofsted inspectors judging our Primary and Secondary teacher education programmes as “Outstanding” in 2015.
We are one of top 10 UK modern universities for good honours degrees (Complete University Guide 2016), and 94% of our graduates are in employment of further study within six months (DLHE 2013/14).

The Guardian University Guide 2016 ranks courses including Religion, Philosophy and Ethics as well as Photography in their top ten, and we rank among the top 20 universities in the UK for media and film.

And since the scheme was introduced in 2000, 16 academics have been designated National Teaching Fellows by the Higher Education Academy, placing it as one of the top in the country.

Cheltenham is home to two campuses, the Park and Francis Close Hall, with Oxstalls just minutes from the heart of Gloucester.
Expansion of our Oxstalls campus will feature a new business school, community sports facilities and student accommodation and bring at least 2,000 more students to Gloucester. In Cheltenham, our new £37m Pittville student village will provide accommodation for nearly 800 students when it opens in 2017.
