About the position

The Industrial Ecology Programme (IndEcol), Department of Energy and Process Engineering is seeking a PhD candidate to advance research on resource efficiency and its contribution to the mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the context of municipal climate strategies. The case study is Bærum, a municipality near Oslo. Recent work by the International Resource Panel has shown that material efficiency and circular strategies can deliver rapid, substantial reductions in GHG emissions from housing and transport. The proposed work seeks to extend technology-based modeling capabilities and insights so that they can be applied in the context of local urban development at the city and neighborhood scale.

It seeks to combine industrial ecology methods such as life-cycle assessment, material dynamics based on cohort-modeling, and input-output analysis, with engineering tools such as building physics and transport modeling. The overall framework allows for analysis at an urban, country, region, or global scale. The purpose is to support Bærum’s climate strategy, which aims to reduce GHG emissions by at least 40% by 2030 and establish Fornebu as a zero-emissions neighborhood. The work builds on empirical findings and bottom-up models by participating research teams.

The Head of Department is Professor Terese Løvås. The candidate’s supervisors are Professors Edgar Hertwich and Helge Brattebø.

Duties of the position

  • Interaction with local stakeholders in research design, data collection, and communication of results
  • Method and model development
  • Data collection and model parametrization
