As a part of the Faculty of Science, the Department of Computer Science (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/computer-science) is a leading Computer Science research and teaching unit in Europe. The number of professors at the Department has grown in recent years and there are now 29 professorships. The main research fields at the Department are artificial intelligence, big data frameworks, bioinformatics, data analysis, data science, discrete and machine learning algorithms, distributed, intelligent, and interactive systems, networks, security, and software and database systems. The Department has extensive international collaboration with companies and universities.

RESEARCH COORDINATOR AT THE DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

The Department of Computer Science hosts a wide array of experimental research infrastructure including the UbiCampus smart campus infrastructure, experimental laboratories for Internet of Things (IoT), Software Development, User Experience, and Networking (NodesLab), as well as all the related research equipment, computing, and data science infrastructure. The Department now seeks a Research Coordinator to lead the development of its extensive experimental research infrastructure. The position will be filled for a fixed-term of 5 years or permanently starting in Spring 2021 based on the negotiations between the Department and the to-be-appointed Research Coordinator. A 6-month probationary period is applied in the position.

By nature, the position involves a heavy load of operative work, although it is closely linked to practical research. The Research Coordinator supports the Department’s experimental research projects by managing and supervising the use of the infrastructures. The Research Coordinator is also expected to make their due contribution to the development of the extensive experimental research infrastructures and their cutting-edge facilities, equipment and software. For example, the development of the Department´s infrastructure roadmap together with researchers and its practical implementation are central tasks in the position. In addition, the Research Coordinator´s duties include participation in writing funding applications, support with infrastructure purchases, coordination with potential subcontractors, and co-operation with the Department´s IT personnel in implementation of the infrastructures. Moreover, the Research Coordinator participates in international research collaborations involving experimental research infrastructures.

The Research Coordinator also takes part in teaching courses on computing infrastructure as well as supervision of Master’s theses involving the experimental research infrastructure.

Requirements

The Research Coordinator shall hold a doctoral degree in Computer Science or a closely related field and have evidence of scientific research, especially experience in experimental software systems research. The position of Research Coordinator requires, in particular, the ability to administer research projects and their finances, and previous experience in leading the development of extensive experimental ICT research infrastructures is perceived as a large asset. Ideally, the Research Coordinator is familiar with the Finnish and the European research environment and related funding instruments. Moreover, the Research Coordinator is expected to have necessary teaching skills to teach courses on computing infrastructure and ability supervise Master´s theses involving research infrastructure. Success in the position requires fluency in English, proficiency in Finnish is advantageous.

Salary and benefits

Salary range for the position is 4000-5000 €/month depending on the qualifications of the applicant.
