The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of

UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

for a fixed-term employment 1 January 2021 – 31 December 2021.

We are looking for an English language and linguistics specialist to serve as a university lecturer in English. The appointee is expected to have research-based expertise in some of the research topics that are relevant in the subject at the University of Helsinki, such as sociolinguistics, pragmatics or discourse studies. The university lecturer will be responsible for the provision of teaching in English and in research focused on the English language in the Bachelor’s Programme in Languages and the English Studies Master’s Programme with other teachers. In addition to the courses included in the English syllabus, the teaching load of the university lecturer may include methodology courses targeted at all language students in the Bachelor’s Programme in Languages. The university lecturer must also conduct scientific research, examine and supervise theses and perform other tasks as agreed.

The position requires good cooperation skills and the ability to work in a group and give courses together with other teachers. The university lecturer will contribute to the development of his or her field and the planning of teaching in cooperation with the department, degree programmes and colleagues in the field. The position is at the Department of Languages.

APPOINTMENT CRITERIA

A university lecturer must hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations. When assessing the qualifications of applicants for a university lectureship, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration.

To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have excellent skills in English.

SALARY

The appointee’s gross monthly salary will range from €3,300 to €4,500, depending on his or her qualifications and experience. There is a six-month trial period.
