King’s College London (http://www.kcl.ac.uk/index.aspx) is one of the world’s top 20 universities. It is part of King’s Health Partners, the UK’s largest Academic Health Sciences Centre, in partnership with 3 leading NHS Foundation Trusts: Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and the South London and Maudsley. King’s is one of the most successful higher education institutes in attracting funding from the National Institute for Health Research.

The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) (https://www.sustech.edu.cn/en/) was established in 2011 by the provincial government of Guangdong, China with the aim of developing a new type of tertiary education and becoming a world-class research university. It is located in the rapidly-growing tech capital city of Shenzhen. The Times Higher Education 2021 survey ranked SUSTech among the Top Ten universities in mainland China.

The Joint School of Medicine (JSM) is an ambitious project between King’s and SUSTech to establish a world-class Joint Education Institute in Shenzhen, China.  The purpose of the JSM is to develop innovative, world-class joint education programmes in a number of fields including (initially) degrees in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Biomedical Engineering.  It will also seek to engage with high-tech and med-tech industry in southern China and Hong Kong to generate pedagogical and curriculum advances.

The Opportunity:

King’s College London is seeking academic candidates to act as Programme Leads on the three new JSM programmes.   Successful candidates will spend 4-6 months at King’s College London developing educational materials and methods before starting teaching duties on the SUSTech campus for a period of two years.   Appointments will be on the King’s Academic Education Pathway (AEP) that allows career progression to Professor based upon contribution to education and scholarship.  Staff on the AEP have an indicative 20% of time available to engage in education-focused scholarship.

Requirements of the Post:

Candidates must have a PhD in the biosciences, outstanding educator skills at levels 4 – 7 in the biosciences or pre-clinical medicine, and experience of module development and/or module/programme leadership.   A relevant qualification in higher education e.g. PGCAP is desirable.

We are particularly interested in candidates able to teach undergraduate biomedical engineering, pharmacology, medical genetics, and pre-clinical medicine alongside making contributions to transferable skills training, but we are open to applications from all areas of the biomedical sciences.
