The Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care and Population Health is seeking a Community Based Participatory Research Specialist (Social Science Research Professional 2) to work with the Stanford Aging and Ethnogeriatrics (SAGE) Research Center and the Outreach, Recruitment and Engagement Core of the Stanford Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (SADRC).

Our overall goal is to 1) strengthen and diversify the aging research workforce by mentoring new and junior researchers and postdoctoral scholars from underrepresented backgrounds (i.e., SAGE Scientists) to become independent, culturally sensitive and culturally competent researchers engaged in transdisciplinary integrative research in ethnogeriatrics, (2) to promote community based participatory research advances focused on the health and well-being of diverse older adults, (3) To build and foster community partnerships with organizations serving diverse populations and those serving patients with cognitive impairment to support the mission of the Outreach Recruitment and Engagement Core of the Stanford Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.

Under the general direction of the SAGE leadership the incumbent will be responsible for implementing the vision, strategy, and goals of the community based participatory research component of the Center. The incumbent will work with the SAGE Research Program Manager, Director and team to design, implement and evaluate and foster research partnerships with the local community organizations serving underserved populations. The incumbent will build robust relationships between the SAGE/SADRC Centers and community partners; work with community partners to identify community needs and research opportunities; and assist the SAGE scientists in building community partnerships for their research and incorporating community engagement content in their proposals.

Duties include:

  • Work with the Research Program Manager and the Faculty Director to design and develop Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) programs.
  • Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
  • Solve problems, and make decisions that affect the direction of the research and result in independent contributions to the overall project.
  • Select and apply standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses.
  • Co-author sections of research publications and regulatory reports as needed.
  • Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
  • Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in community based participatory research.
  • Graduate degree with experience/knowledge in community based participatory research preferably with vulnerable populations.
  • Experience working with community partners and building and managing research partnerships.
  • Experience working with persons with dementia from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience working with and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students and supporting their research.
  • Experience contributing to research publications.
  • Ability to proactively, clearly, and effectively communicate information to internal and external partner organizations and granting agencies, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects while also directing the work of others.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Proficient in Spanish language, written and oral communication.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field and two years applicable experience, or combination of education and experience in an applicable social science.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific theory and methods.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with human study participants.
  • Developing supervisory skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, operate foot and/or hand controls.
