Stanford University is seeking a Laboratory Assistant III in the Department of Genetics.

Duties include the following:

Media Preparation:

  • Use online database (Google Sheet) to receive orders and deadlines from research labs.
  • Prepare media and solutions as requested by research labs following recipes provided by labs.
  • Carefully follow sterile procedures.
  • Pay special attention to PH balance of Tissue Culture media.
  • Distribute into plates as requested by labs.
  • Store media/solutions/plates according to best practices when necessary (cool overnight, etc).
  • Deliver finished product to research labs.
  • Resolve problems by examining available data, communicating with requesters, and implementing corrective measures.
  • Work with accounting staff and track hours committed to each lab’s requests to maintain accurate billing on a monthly basis or as requested.

Lab operations:

  • Functions as team leader for glassware staff. Maintain good working relationships with Lab Assistants, providing leadership and guidance, and setting priorities and responsibilities when necessary. Teach new skills to Lab Assistant whenever possible.
  • Order laboratory supplies as necessary (SmartMart) and maintain up-to-date inventory.
  • Ensure lab areas are kept clean and safe.
  • Teach new skills to Lab Assistant whenever possible.

Machines:

  • Follow proper procedures when using lab equipment (autoclaves, etc.).
  • Troubleshoot the equipment when malfunctioning; perform basic maintenance when appropriate.
  • Call for repairs when necessary.
  • Keep supervisor informed of any problems with equipment and track repairs.

Glassware

  • Pickup soiled glassware from research labs.
  • Wash, sterilize, and prepare items for storage according to best practices
  • Redistribute prepared glassware to research labs and stack according to lab specifications.
  • Order glassware supplies as necessary (SmartMart) and maintain up-to-date inventory.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior experience as a Laboratory Assistant III is preferred.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

In addition to the requirements of the Laboratory Assistant II, this position requires at least an additional year of experience in laboratory-related work a combination of equivalent education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • In addition to qualifications listed for the Laboratory Assistant II level, these employees must be able to coordinate and organize a variety of duties within general guidelines; they must be thoroughly familiar with various needsof a laboratory.
  • Must be able to establish good working relationships with a variety of professional, technical, and support staff and/or students.
  • Ability to train and/or lead employees.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks.
  • Write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate special machines
  • Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach /work above shoulders, light fine grasping.
  • Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.
  • Rarely help move heavier items (e.g. chairs or lab equipment; packages of supplies; drums containing 2 to 15 gallons, depending on ability.
  • In some Glassware Washing operations, occasionally may pull a wheeled Glassware cart that weighs approximately 100 pounds

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, Lab Assistants may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.
