Research Fellow, ARC Centre of Excellence in Automated Decision-Making and Society
- Full-time, 3 year, fixed-term contract; based at RMIT City campus but may be required to work and/or based at other campuses of the University
- Join a multidisciplinary research team and be involve in this ARC Centre of Excellence on Automated Decision Making and Society project focusing on measuring, modelling, and evaluating the fairness, bias, and trustworthiness of algorithms and data including in Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and user models
- Access to state-of-art facilities and equipment entre for Information Discovery and Data Analytics at RMIT University
- Reports directly to the Professor Mark Sanderson, ECP Director, Info & Systems (Engineering, Enabling Capability Platforms)
- Remuneration at Academic Level B ($98,495- $116,965) + 17% superannuation

The School of Science provides over 45 bachelor and postgraduate programs and undertakes world class research across the disciplines of physical sciences, mathematical sciences and computer science.
One of RMITs top-performing research schools, we deliver research that addresses the 'real life questions' essential to Australia's innovation agenda. Our high-quality teaching programs inspire students to pursue careers in a range of industries including health, materials technology, food, geospatial and surveying, environmental analysis, banking and commerce, as well as computing and IT roles and research and development across a wide range of areas. About ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society
The ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) is a new, cross-disciplinary, $32 million national research centre, which aims to create the knowledge and strategies necessary for responsible, ethical, and inclusive automated decision-making. Funded by the Australian Research Council from 2020 to 2026, ADM+S is hosted at RMIT in Melbourne, with nodes in seven other Australian universities. The Centre brings together leading researchers in the humanities, social and technological sciences in an international industry, research, and civil society network. Its priority domains for public engagement are news and media, transport, social services, and health.
About You & the Role
- Perform competitive research and development activities relevant to the Centre with multidisciplinary researchers leading to high quality refereed journals, reports and/or books
- Contribute and generate new and high-quality research outcomes that are advantageous to the scientific advancement for this project through presenting ideas and research findings at seminars, conferences, and industry meetings, as well as engagement with external stakeholders
- Actively participate in various research initiatives and strategies relevant to the ARC Centre's research culture, which includes participation in research collaboration and community-building within the Centre's research programs and focus areas
- Prepare & produce competitive research grant proposals, applications and generating funding through strong linkage and effective liaison with industry and government
- Plan and manage managing research projects timelines ensuring research conducted conform to the University and ARC requirements with respect to research ethics, integrity and data management as well as conducting research in accordance to health and safety policies & work practices
You will have:
- Solid theoretical and sound working knowledge in at least one of the following areas:
- Machine learning and deep learning
- Interactive information retrieval, human-computer interaction
- Recommender systems
- Multi-objective and multi-criteria optimization
- Behavioral data science
- Time-series and spatio-temporal data mining
- FATE (Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics)
- Proven research experience in:
- The design and conduct of user studies for evaluation of the information access systems
- Maintaining and contributing to public codebase or repository
- Performing machine learning experiments using multiple large-scale datasets and public benchmarks
- Evidence of excellent track record in research and scientific investigations including publications in high quality Q1 peer reviewed journals and conference contributions as ranked by CORE in AI and machine learning, data mining, Information retrieval and/or HCI, such as ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, AAAI, KDD, WWW, WSDM, SIGIR, IUI, IMWUT/UbiComp, CHIIR, FAccT, CHI, CSCW
- Highly developed problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to communicate and present research findings, concepts, and knowledge in dealing with ambiguity
- Ability to manage and plan your time effectively and efficiently to conduct innovative research independently and collaboratively, work effectively to meet project outcomes and milestones as well as maintaining a high-achieving research culture
- Good interpersonal and strong communication skills (both verbal and written) appropriate for interacting with research students, staff, and external stakeholders, together with a strong commitment to teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration
Mandatory: PhD qualified in the field Computer Science and Information Technology relevant discipline area within the past 5 years at the time of appointment, not including periods of career interruption due to carers responsibilities, parental leave, illness, or disability.
Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children check.
