Description:

Course number and title: EAS245H1S - Premodern Japanese History

Course description: A survey of the history of premodern Japan from earliest recorded histories to the establishment of the Tokugawa regime in the seventeenth century. Uses a wide range of translated primary Japanese texts to illuminate the emergence of cultural forms and their conjunction with social, economic, religious, and political trends.

Estimated course enrolment: 80 students

Estimated TA support: 105 hours

Class schedule: Thursdays, 11 am - 1 pm

Recordings of lectures or alternative lecture material must be made available to students who cannot attend for reasons such as time differences. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the Department.

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2021 – April 30, 2021

Salary:

Sessional Lecturer I: $8,489.67

Sessional Lecturer I, Long Term: $8,869.25

Sessional Lecturer II: $9,085.58

Sessional Lecturer III: $9,301.90

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications: Completed PhD required with significant graduate work, and ongoing academic development in the field.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience at the university level preferred with evidence of superior teaching evaluations; experience teaching online preferred.

Description of duties: Preparing lesson plans and lectures; delivering lectures; developing and administering grading, course assignments, tests, and exams; supervising TA(s); and providing scheduled office hours for academic counselling of students.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.

Please note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
