Adjunct Associate Professor in Software Engineering Software Startup
About the position
We have a vacancy for an Adjunct Associate Professor in Software Engineering within the Information Systems and Software Engineering research group at the Department of Computer Science (IDI). The Adjunct Professor position has a full-time equivalence of 20% and has a fixed term of up to 5 years with the possibility of employment for further periods.
Software engineering research is to a great extent concerned with investigating the development, operation, and maintenance of software products with industry and society. Modern software engineering is also concerned about the societal and organizational context for software.
The position reports to the Head of the Department.
Duties of the positions
- Research: The candidate shall be responsible for participating in research activities within the general areas of Software Engineering with focus in Software Startup and Empirical software engineering
- Teaching: It is expected that the candidate will contribute in research-based education which includes teaching and course development for bachelors, masters and PhD students within Software Engineering at IDI.
Required selection criteria
The position of Adjunct Associate Professor requires university education at doctoral level and demonstrable academic excellence in Software Engineering.
The applicant’s research must be documented and of high, international quality, showing both breadth and depth. Research activity and output must demonstrate an independent research profile and the ability to take up new research issues. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within the subject area. The greatest emphasis is placed on academic work undertaken during the past five years, excluding statutory leave.
Emphasis will be placed on ability and experience in leading research and publishing of the field of area.
In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, the candidate must document:
- Development in teaching and counselling of students over time
- Extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level
- Participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment
- International experience and a documented track record of fundamental and applied research
Other requirements: The successful applicant will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Master and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.
It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.
The position of Assistant Professor within Software Engineering requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4.
- Your PhD, or academic work of the same scope and quality, must be within Software Startup Research
- International Publications in the best software engineering venues (both journal and conference) with focus in Software Startup, Secure software development, Team coordination, Open Source Software; Empirical software engineering
- Experience with teaching courses in software engineering
You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
Preferred selection criteria
- Applicants with experience in teaching project-based software engineering courses
- Experience in qualitative research methods
- Good relationship with students
- Strong motivation to contribute to good working and social environment

Salary and conditions
In a position as Adjunct Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 560 000 to NOK 760 per year, corresponding with a 20% position, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
