Lecturer Data Visualization for Policy Analysis

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Chicago seeks a qualified lecturer for the 2019/20 school year to teach one section of an existing class on Data Visualization for Policy Analysis in the Master of Computational Analysis and Public Policy program (https://capp.uchicago.edu/), which is jointly run by the Department of Computer Science and the Harris School of Public Policy.
Data Visualization for Policy Analysis introduces students to the tools, skills, and concepts necessary for making compelling data visualizations for political analysis, public policy research, and data- driven story telling. Students learn about the theory of graphical design, including the grammar of graphics, and the science of visual perception such as to inform making visualizations that are intuitive, effective, and memorable.
The course will be taken by (mostly) second-year students who have taken the core curriculum of the MS-CAPP degree, as well as some qualified students the Masters of Public Policy. This course has been taught before, and course materials such as the syllabus are available, though the lecturer will have agency to make substantial changes to the course.
Courses are held for ten weeks during each academic quarter, with the eleventh week for a final project or exam. Courses can meet in the daytime (meeting 2-3 times a week for a total of three hours) or in the evening (meeting once per week for three hours). The exact day(s)/time(s) are determined in consultation with the Lecturer.
This position is part-time and is not benefits eligible. Applicants must currently be authorized to work permanently in the U.S.
Applicants will be evaluated on teaching skills and command of specific course content. Applicants must have completed a Master's degree in a relevant field or have equivalent professional experience in the specific course area. Applicants with a PhD in in a relevant field or experience in teaching at the university level will be given preferred consideration.
