The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) is a unique interdisciplinary Research Centre of Excellence (RCE), funded by National Research Foundation, Ministry of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS). Hosted by NTU in partnership with NUS, SCELSE is linking new insights from the life sciences with expertise from emerging technologies in engineering and natural sciences to understand, harness and control microbial biofilm communities.

We are seeking to appoint a talented individual to join our team at SCELSE as a Research Assistant. The successful candidate will undertake research investigating the regulation of factors involved in the pathogenesis of the bacterium Enterococcus faecalis. Our studies will use molecular genetics and innate immunological/lipidomics approaches to assess these virulence traits. In addition, we employ imaging, next-generation sequencing, mouse models of infection, and a variety of ‘omics approach in our research.


The work will be conducted within SCELSE, which has established a strong research platform for the investigation of functional microbial communities in both environmental and infection contexts, with a specific focus on microbial biofilms. The centre is supported by its in-house ‘omics, bioinformatics and systems biology capacities as well as a range of infection models and an in-house imaging facility. 

Key Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will have specific experience in the genetic manipulation of Enterococcus faecalis, in lipidomics, fluorescent imaging, and in studies related to antimicrobial resistance. This position will involve regular interactions with the supervisor, communication and interpretation of experimental progress, and presentation of data at group meetings.

Job Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in microbiology, immunology or any related field
  • General microbiology experience
  • Molecular genetics techniques in bacteria
  • Tissue culture expertise
  • Expertise in mouse models of infection
  • Record keeping and data communication
