The Clinical and Translational Research Unit (CTRU) at Stanford University School of Medicine is seeking a Research Phlebotomist to perform phlebotomy and duties related to the collection of clinical samples and data, primarily for a large clinical study, but may work across several studies.

The CTRU is the School’s largest, research-focused, ambulatory care and laboratory services group offering both adult and pediatric bedside, phlebotomy, dietary and laboratory services across the research community. The CTRU is a primary backbone for accelerating the translation of bedside diagnostics and treatments and advancing research technologies into clinical applications. The Center is at the frontier of precision health efforts across the research community.

The Research Phlebotomist reports to the CTRU Nurse Manager.  Duties also include assisting with receiving, handling, storage and shipment of samples. After a period of training, the position will be based primarily at the Stanford Research Park campus, but the Research Phlebotomist may occasionally be required to work at other CTRU sites.

This position places a heavy emphasis on attention to detail, and the ability to multitask efficiently and accurately is required. This position will require occasional late weekday and/or weekend work, depending upon operational needs.

Duties include:

• Perform basic measurements and venipuncture on participants according to protocol after appropriate training.
• Collect and manage study specimens according to protocol.
• Create and manage phlebotomy research kits; ensure quality control.
• Schedule and/or call subjects for appointments; contact participants with reminders or other requirements.
• Perform clerical duties in the preparation of regulatory documents. Maintain forms and documents, including consent forms and master subject logs; file correspondence.
• Assist with preparing, processing, and shipping specimens/samples accurately under well-defined requirements.
• Order and maintain equipment and supplies.
• Work safely with potentially biohazardous biological specimens under the Stanford University Environmental Health & Safety guidelines.
• Provide consistent, professional, and courteous customer service.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience as a phlebotomist or medical assistant, and/or experience in a blood donor setting.

Pediatric phlebotomy experience.

Ability to take and record vital signs including blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, respiration rate, oxygen saturation, height and weight, and prepare applicable forms for data collection and transfer.

Organizational skills to troubleshoot unplanned situations while still meeting established CTRU deadlines.

Microsoft office suite or ability to learn new software.

The ability to communicate well both in writing and verbally.

Must maintain punctuality, maintain good attendance and be flexible to work hours when study subjects are scheduled.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Two-year college degree and one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

General knowledge of medical terminology.

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:

Working toward certification(s) to perform basic patient measurements and tests, such as phlebotomy and EKG.

State of California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) Certificate highly preferred.

Basic Life Support Certificate preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

• Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat and use fine light/fine grasping.
• Occasionally sit, reach above shoulders, perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone and write by hand, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
• Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, grasp forcefully, sort and file paperwork or parts, rarely lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.

Additional PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
