About the position

We have a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in dynamics and simulation-based risk modeling for operational decision support and verification at the Department of Marine Technology.

The position is funded by SFI AutoShip (www.ntnu.edu/sfi-autoship), the new 8 year research-based innovation Centre in autonomous ships. Here, we are joining forces with more than 20 partners from industry, public sector, universities and research institutes. Research areas cover competences that the Norwegian maritime industry needs in autonomy, digital infrastructure, maritime transport, safety and risk analysis, maritime law, human-machine interaction, and cyber security.

The position reports to the Supervising Professor.

Duties of the position

The traditional risk analysis techniques have weaknesses related to the lack of focus on couplings in systems. This has led to the development of simulation-based probabilistic risk assessment, such as the Accident Dynamic Simulator (ADS). Generally, the discrete simulation methodologies use a simulation engine that generates branches at specific time steps with associated probabilities for the risk scenarios. Advantages of the dynamic simulation-based approaches are that they can more realistically represent event sequence timing, provide more insights into condition assessment and consequences, aid in scenario generation through algorithms, include operator responses, and simulation tracking can provide information about the scenarios. Still, they also have some weaknesses, for example, related to scenario generation and the modeling and integration of couplings between hardware, software and human risks. Simulation-based methodologies are expected to play a critical role in risk assessment of autonomous systems to assist in the detailed understanding of the systems and operations, to collect data, for decision support, and to validate systems’ behavior.

The Post Doc will: work on advancing and improving simulation-based PRA for risk assessment and verification and validation of autonomous ships.

The position will be responsible for developing scientific journal and conference publications addressing the above-mentioned topics.

Required selection criteria

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree in Marine Technology/Cybernetics; Marine Safety; Reliability, Availabilty, Maintenance, Safety (RAMS); Computer Science or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

If, for any reason, you have taken a career break or have had an atypical career and wish to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognizing that the quantity of your research may be reduced as a result.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

  • Excellent English skills, written and spoken, are required. Applicants from non-English speak countries outside Europe must present an official language test report. The acceptable tests are TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
    • TOEFL: 600 / writing 4.5 (paper-based test), 92 / writing 22 (internet-based test)
    • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
    • CAE/CPE: grade B or A.
  • Excellent programming skills (MATLAB, Phyton)

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience in risk analysis and risk modeling (any sector)
  • Experience with maritime systems
  • Knowledge about marine technology

Personal characteristics
