BIOSAFETY OFFICER, Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Office-Biosafety Program, to join the team working to ensure the safe and responsible conduct of biological research at MIT. Will provide leadership and technical expertise in the area of biological safety to the research and campus communities; participate in an active and robust Biosafety Program involving strong, collaborative interactions with faculty, researchers, postdocs, students, the Occupational Health group at MIT Medical, and the MIT community; assist with resolving complex issues; facilitate the Biological Research Registration program; conduct biosafety training and laboratory inspections; provide guidance on laboratory design and renovation projects; work with stakeholders to provide comprehensive oversight of a wide range of biological research; and serve as a biosafety subject matter expert on a multidisciplinary team of safety professionals. May develop and manage programs within EHS. Will report to the associate director, institutional biosafety officer.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: undergraduate degree in microbiology, biology, virology or related area; at least four years’ experience; strong oral and written communication skills; self-motivation; and attention to detail. Must be able to develop strong working relationships with faculty conducting a range of biological research; develop practical advice that serves overall objectives in as safe a manner as is practical; produce creative solutions to unusual problems; and work effectively with people at all levels across the Institute.

PREFERED: graduate degree in microbiology, biology, virology or related area; experience in laboratory or animal research; working knowledge of NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules (2019) and the CDC/NIH Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, 5th edition; teaching experience or other example of effective communication of technical topics; and proficiency with Microsoft Office products and Adobe Acrobat. Job #19027-9

Will participate in on-call rotational system providing routine and off-hours support when necessary to resolve emergency EHS issues and serve as specialist to emergency response groups.
