MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEERLaboratory for Nuclear Science (LNS)-Bates Research and Engineering Center, to join a facility that designs and builds equipment for use in physics research worldwide.  Will conceptualize, conduct, coordinate, or make significant contributions to large and multiple small projects; work with project scientists, professors, and engineering management to translate scientific needs into engineering concepts and specifications, including budget creation, overseeing schedule, and reporting; interact with lab-wide professional staff and develop internal/external collaborations, including preparing and presenting proposals and communicating directly with collaborators; provide critical technical direction for the development and integration of project components; and oversee the design, construction, and installation of the accelerator, detector, cryogenic, vacuum, and other engineering systems for national user facilities (including Brookhaven, Jefferson, Oak Ridge laboratories; Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University; European Particle Laboratory CERN, and others). 

Job Requirements

REQUIRED:  B.S. or higher in engineering; at least three years' relevant experience working with accelerator systems, cooling systems, particle detectors, magnets, or similar complex mechanical systems; experience with solid 3D modeling tools and FEA for electro-mechanical design; knowledge of machine shop operations, thermal sciences, and mechanical design; excellent written and verbal communication skills; hands-on experience with fabrication, assembly, and testing of complex mechanical systems; self-motivation and the ability to work independently; and willingness to collaborate in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.  Must be able to design equipment and oversee the fabrication of complex components, write clear procedures, document test results, present findings for critical review in team meetings, and master and quickly contribute to complex engineering projects while maintaining aggressive schedules.  

PREFERRED:  experience with the design of complex vacuum and detector systems for physics experiments. Job #19040
