FACULTY OF VETERINARY SCIENCE

DEPARTMENT VETERINARY TROPICAL DISEASES

In the domain of Tropical Animal Health, the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases (DVTD) within the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort, is well positioned to play a leading role, especially in research and the training of postgraduate students of the region and further afield. The DVTD is therefore seeking a prolific senior academic in Veterinary Virology. The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in Virology;
  • Rendering community and other services to farmers, the veterinary profession; industry and other clients as required;
  • Postgraduate training and supervision;
  • Research and publications in scientific journals;
  • Writing of grants and generating income;
  • Establishment of new diagnostic tests in the Virology Laboratory;
  • Networking with relevant stakeholders;
  • Community engagement;
  • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
  • Academic self-development.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Associate Professor

  • Doctoral degree (PhD) in Virology;
  • Significant national professional recognition;
  • Demonstrable experience in research, supported by a number of quality research-based full papers in national and international accredited journals with focus on Veterinary Virology;
  • A record of previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience;
  • Successful supervision of Masters students;
  • Evidence of involvement with PhD students;
  • The ability to attract independent research funding;
  • Participatory membership of professional bodies; and
  • Evidence of academic scholarship.

Professor

  • Doctoral degree (PhD) in Virology;
  • Significant international professional recognition;
  • Demonstrable experience in research, supported by a sustained record and impact of publications in national and international accredited journals with focus on Veterinary Virology;
  • A record of previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience;
  • Successful supervision of several students on Masters, PhD and post-doctoral level;
  • The ability to attract independent research funding;
  • Participatory membership of professional bodies; and
  • Evidence of exceptional academic scholarship.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Proven competencies in classical virology and molecular virology;
  • Proven competencies in field epidemiology and research project design with focus in veterinary diseases;
  • The ability to critically evaluate and interpret experimental results and articulate key findings within cross-functional teams;
  • National and international acknowledgement of academic standing and leadership in the relevant academic discipline;
  • Good language and communication skills (written and verbal comprehension and verbal expression); and
  • Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation, word-processing, spreadsheets and social networking skills.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • A BVSc-degree, or equivalent degree as an undergraduate degree;
  • Registration as a specialist Veterinary Microbiologist;
  • Experience in setting up and managing OIE reference laboratories;
  • Experience in the diagnosis of Transboundary Diseases;
  • Experience in the management of an accredited Virology diagnostic laboratory;
  • National Research Foundation (NRF) rating as a research scientist, or eligibility to apply for a rating.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
