Job description

This role is suited to someone with e-learning/education/computing/design background with a strong organisational and project delivery skills who is already working in, or considering a career in educational technology/digital education.

The main purpose of this role is designing and developing high quality teaching resources and compelling interactive learning activities for synchronous and asynchronous teaching sessions. The postholder will have confidence in their ability to provide training in the use of learning technologies to students and staff and to offer educational technology guidance. It will involve delivering digital learning solutions and supporting staff and students with digital education queries. The Learning Technologist (Instructional designer) will collaborate with a diverse group of staff and students to produce educational content and manage digital learning development projects for two world-leading health faculties [the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences (FoDOCS) and the Florence Nightingale Faculty for Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care (NMPC)].

As both FoDOCS and FNMPC offer of online and blended/distance learning programmes, the post holder is expected to have knowledge and experience of developing resources in a Virtual learning environment (e.g. Moodle or other content/learning management system) and the associated learning technologies (e.g. Office 365, content production tools). Creative and design skills (videography and graphic design) are highly desirable. The role will also involve evaluation of learning environments and resources and to prepare and write reports.

Key responsibilities

  • Providing instructional design expertise and guidance on design approaches and TEL pedagogical models for distance and blended learning delivery
  • Providing expertise on main digital technologies deployed in the faculty and within King's at operational level which involve diagnosing issues and providing digital learning solutions
  • Taking a lead role on implementation and evaluation of the effective use of digital learning technologies (e.g. authoring/content production software, lecture capture, e-portfolios, e-assessment tools, etc.)
  • Developing and creating engaging learning activities and compelling course content that enhances knowledge retention and transfer and in response to students' feedback on quality of teaching resources
  • To create accompanying supporting materials, training resources and user guides in various media for digital content produced for teaching and learning.
  • Contributing to the enhancement of teaching quality by collaborating with staff in delivering curriculum requirements at all programmes and levels particularly the modules with blended/distance learning components
  • Producing high-level reports on digital technology usage and outcomes for use at College and Faculty level, which involves managing collection and analysis of data relating to learning technology usage, access to digital learning resources and analysis of common complaints and problems to help improve TEL service provision.   • Applying exceptional attention to detail when producing project plans, design briefs/documentation, project task lists/priorities, timelines/Gantt charts, evaluation of design/performance objectives and dissemination plans.
  • Disseminating project activities, reports, the status of services and achievements to stakeholders covering implementation progress and any relevant issues and outcomes to relevant committees in the faculties and King's via face-to-face and online meetings.
  • Managing workload independently in the context of project plan timeframes and deadlines and ensuring that learning design meets specifications of stakeholders and expectations of users (evaluation of design, test by the designer, trials with the actual users and setting, etc.).
  • Taking responsibility for ensuring and monitoring compliance with University QA processes, data storage and data protection, copyright and ethical standards, accessibility, and usability standards
  • Providing technical support in simulation (including high fidelity haptics suite), virtual reality and emerging digital healthcare technologies for education; this may involve providing technical consultancy on occasion (Training will be provided)
  • Ensuring full resolution of issues and delivery of TEL support requirements from staff and students (e.g. technical assistance for questions, troubleshooting and diagnosing problems related to TEL (software and hardware, design issues on content produced by iTEL, expert advice and training on the best use of Moodle VLE/LMS, learning technologies e.g. authoring software, lecture capture, e-portfolios, e-assessment tools, etc.).
  • Performing other duties on behalf of the Director of the iTEL Hub and faculty executives where part of the remit and relevant to the Digital Education and TEL Strategy.
  • The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Skills, knowledge, and experience


Essential criteria

  • Degree level qualification with experience in e-learning/educational technology with an understanding of how this applies in the HE context
  • Demonstrating knowledge and skills of learning and instructional design
  • The ability to produce engaging learning activities and compelling course content that enhances knowledge retention and transfer
  • Managing complex relationships with diverse group of students and staff in a sensitive and results-oriented fashion
  • Applying exceptional attention to detail when producing e.g. project plans, design brief/documentation, project task lists/priorities, timelines/Gantt chart, evaluation of design/performance objectives and dissemination plans.
  • Demonstrating ability to balance competing priorities under pressure of deadlines and workload.
  • Maintaining professional standards when responding to support requests and queries from students and staff by contributing effectively as part of a team.
  • The ability to present confidently in a variety of contexts at all levels including workgroup, committee meetings and training workshops. Must also be able to create high quality training materials including user guides.
  • Providing technical support for questions, troubleshooting and diagnosing problems related to TEL content and delivery.
  • Disseminating project activities, reports, service status and achievements to stakeholders, covering implementation, progress and any relevant issues and outcomes to relevant committees in the faculties and King's via face-to-face and online meetings.

Desirable criteria

  • Collaboration with stakeholders (students/staff/academics/learning design team, etc.) in relation to pedagogy, curriculum design and development.
  • Understanding of regulatory frameworks surrounding quality assurance processes, data storage and data protection, copyright and ethical standards, accessibility and usability standards.
  • Design and creativity skills involving multimedia and graphic designs skills

Further information
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview. At the interview, candidates will also give a presentation. Details of the presentation will be specified in the interview invitation.

There will also be a test assessing ICT skills and evaluating the candidates' level of design experience.

Interviews will held be on the 4th of November. Ideally, candidates should be available to start within a short notice period.
